Portland, Oregon managed to become a sustainable city after it reduced the dependence of people on automobiles, started mass transit, developed an extensive network of bike lanes and walkways, and implemented the recycling system.

Portland, Oregon has managed to become a more sustainable city by the following ways given below:

(i) Portland used strong land-use policies to control its growth, reduce the dependence on automobiles, and preserve green space.

(ii) Portland encouraged the development of mixed-use neighborhoods with stores, light industries, professional offices, high-density housing, and access to mass transit, which allowed most people to meet most of their daily needs without using a car.

(iii) The city constructed excellent light-rail and bus lines. It further reduced car use by developing an extensive network of bike lanes and walkways.

(iv) Portland implemented the recycling system in 1987. This resulted in recycling and composting of 67% of the municipal solid waste by 2013.
