Identify the correct description(s) of typical muscle tissue.
a. Muscle activity can be voluntary or involuntary.
b. Muscle tissue has the ability to shorten.
c. All muscle types have multinucleate cells-
d. Some muscle tissue has branched muscle cells.
Introduction:
The muscles of the skeleton system make approximately half of the mass of the body of an organism. The muscle tissue can be categorized into three divisions: the skeletal muscles, the cardiac muscles, and the smooth muscles. All these muscles differ in the structure of the cells, their stimulation for the contraction and the location of these cells into the body.
Answer to Problem 1MC
Correct answer:
The muscle activity can be voluntary or involuntary, the muscle tissue has the ability to shorten, and some muscle tissue has branched muscle cells.
Explanation of Solution
Justification for the correct answers:
Option (a) is given that the muscle activity can be voluntary or involuntary. Since the skeletal muscles are under the direct conscious control. The skeletal muscles are called the voluntary muscles. The smooth muscles and the cardiac muscles are the involuntary muscles. They are not under the direct conscious control. Hence, option (a) is correct.
Option (b) is given that muscle tissue has the ability to shorten. Since the skeletal muscles are the muscles which possess striations on their surface. These striations are due to the alternating light and dark bands. These alternating light and dark bands work together with the myofilaments of the muscle cells. This results in the contraction of the skeletal muscle cells. Hence, option (b) is correct.
Option (d) is given that some muscle tissue has branched muscles. Since the cardiac muscles are the branched muscles cells. These possess the branching chains of the cells. Hence, option (d) is correct.
Justification for the incorrect answer:
Option (c) is given that all muscle types have multinucleated cells. Since the skeletal muscles and the cardiac muscles are multinucleated. The smooth muscles are not multinucleated. These smooth muscles are uninucleate cells. So, it is an incorrect option.
Hence, options, (a), (b), and (d) are correct.
Thus, it can be concluded that the muscle cells are voluntary and involuntary and have the ability to contract. Some of the muscle has branching cells and all the muscle cells are not multinucleated.
