- Which of the following is not true about the MACRS depreciation system: A salvage value must be determined before depreciation percentages are applied to depreciable real estate. Residential rental buildings are depreciated over 27.5 years straight-line. Commercial real estate buildings are depreciated over 39 years straight-line. No matter when during the month depreciable real estate is purchased, it is considered to have been placed in service at mid-month for MACRS depreciation purposes.arrow_forwardGrandorf Company replaced the engine in a truck for 8,000 and expects the new engine will extend the life of the truck two years beyond the original estimated life. Related information is provided below. Cost of truck 65,000 Salvage value 5,000 Original estimated life 6 years The truck was purchased on January 1, 20-1. The engine was replaced on January 1, 20-6. Using straight-line depreciation, compute depreciation expense for 20-6.arrow_forwardSand River Sales has a fork truck used in its warehouse operations. The truck had an original useful life of five years. However, after depreciating the asset for three years, the company makes a major repair that extends the life by four years. What is the remaining useful life after the major repair?arrow_forward
- On January 1, 2014, Klinefelter Company purchased a building for 520,000. The building had an estimated life of 20 years and an estimated residual value of 20,000. The company has been depreciating the building using straight-line depreciation. At the beginning of 2020, the following independent situations occur: a. The company estimates that the building has a remaining life of 10 years (for a total of 16 years). b. The company changes to the sum-of-the-years-digits method. c. The company discovers that it had ignored the estimated residual value in the computation of the annual depreciation each year. Required: For each of the independent situations, prepare all journal entries related to the building for 2020. Ignore income taxes.arrow_forwardBaglias Wholesale Trinkets has a 3-D printer used in operations. The original useful life was estimated to be six years. However, after two years of use, the printer was overhauled, and its total useful life was extended to eight years. How many years of depreciation remain after the overhaul in year 2?arrow_forwardTo test your formulas, assume the machine purchased had an estimated useful life of three years (20,000, 30,000, and 50,000 hours, respectively). Enter the new information in the Data Section of the worksheet. Does your depreciation total 320,000 under all three methods? There are three common errors made by students completing this worksheet. Lets clear up two of them. One, an asset that has a three-year life should have no depreciation claimed in Year 4. This can be corrected using an =IF statement in Year 4. For example, the correct formula in cell C32 is =IF(B32D9,0,(D7D8)/D9) or =IF(B32D9, 0, SLN(D7, D8, D9)). You may wish to edit what you have already entered rather than retype it. Two, as mentioned in requirement 2, the double-declining-balance calculation needs to be modified in the last year of the assets life. Assuming you have already modified the formula for Year 4 (per instructions in step 2), alter the formula for Year 3 also. If you corrected any formulas, test their correctness by trying different estimated useful lives (between 3 and 8) in cell E9. Then reset the Data Section to the original values, save the revised file as DEPREC2, and reprint the worksheet to show the correct formulas. The third common error doesnt need to be corrected in this problem. The general form of the double-declining-balance formula needs to be modified to check the net book value of the asset each year to make sure it does not go below salvage value. =DDB does this automatically, but if you are writing your own formulas, this gets very complicated and is beyond the scope of the problem.arrow_forward
- At the end of 2020, Magenta Manufacturing Company discovered that construction cost had been capitalized as a cost of the factory building in 2015 when it should have been treated as a cost of production equipment installation costs. As a result of the misclassification, the depreciation through 2018 was understated by 110,000, and depreciation for 2019 was understated by 90,000. What would be the consequences of correcting for the misclassification of the property cost? a. The taxpayer uses the FIFO inventory method, and 25% of goods produced during the period were included in the ending inventory. b. The taxpayer uses the LIFO inventory method, and no new LIFO layer was added during 2019.arrow_forwardWhen depreciation is recorded each period, what account is debited? a. Depreciation Expense b. Cash c. Accumulated Depreciation d. The fixed asset account involved Use the following information for Multiple-Choice Questions 7-4 through 7-6: Cox Inc. acquired a machine for on January 1, 2019. The machine has a salvage value of $20,000 and a 5-year useful life. Cox expects the machine to run for 15,000 machine hours. The machine was actually used for 4,200 hours in 2019 and 3,450 hours in 2020.arrow_forwardTuttle Construction Co. specializes in building replicas of historic houses. Tim Newman, president of Tuttle Construction, is considering the purchase of various items of equipment on July 1, 2014, for 400,000. The equipment would have a useful life of five years and no residual value. In the past, all equipment has been leased. For tax purposes, Tim is considering depreciating the equipment by the straight-line method. He discussed the matter with his CPA and learned that, although the straight-line method could be elected, it was to his advantage to use the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) for tax purposes. He asked for your advice as to which method to use for tax purposes. 1. Compute depreciation for each of the years (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019) of useful life by (a) the straight-line method and (b) MACRS. In using the straight-line method, one-half years depreciation should be computed for 2014 and 2019. Use the MACRS rates presented in Exhibit 9. 2. Assuming that income before depreciation and income tax is estimated to be 750,000 uniformly per year and that the income tax rate is 40%, compute the net income for each of the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 if (a) the straight-line method is used and (b) MACRS is used. 3. What factors would you present for Tims consideration in the selection of a depreciation method?arrow_forward
- Colquhoun International purchases a warehouse for $300,000. The best estimate of the salvage value at the time of purchase was $15,000, and it is expected to be used for twenty-five years. Colquhoun uses the straight-line depreciation method for all warehouse buildings. After four years of recording depreciation, Colquhoun determines that the warehouse will be useful for only another fifteen years. Calculate annual depreciation expense for the first four years. Determine the depreciation expense for the final fifteen years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year five.arrow_forwardMontello Inc. purchases a delivery truck for $25,000. The truck has a salvage value of $6,000 and is expected to be driven for 125,000 miles. Montello uses the units-of-production depreciation method, and in year one it expects to use the truck for 26,000 miles. Calculate the annual depreciation expense.arrow_forwardUrquhart Global purchases a building to house its administrative offices for $500,000. The best estimate of the salvage value at the time of purchase was $45,000, and it is expected to be used for forty years. Urquhart uses the straight-line depreciation method for all buildings. After ten years of recording depreciation, Urquhart determines that the building will be useful for a total of fifty years instead of forty. Calculate annual depreciation expense for the first ten years. Determine the depreciation expense for the final forty years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year eleven.arrow_forward
