Jupiter is about 320 limes as massive as the Earth. Titus, it has been claimed that a person would be crushed by the force of gravity on a planet the size of Jupiter since people can’t survive more than a few g’s. Calculate the number of g’s a person would experience at the equator of such a planet. Use the following data for Jupiter: mass = 1.9 × 1027kg, equatorial radius = 7.1 × 104km, rotation period = 9 hr 55 min. Take the centripetal acceleration into account.

- Model the Moons orbit around the Earth as an ellipse with the Earth at one focus. The Moons farthest distance (apogee) from the center of the Earth is rA = 4.05 108 m, and its closest distance (perigee) is rP = 3.63 108 m. a. Calculate the semimajor axis of the Moons orbit. b. How far is the Earth from the center of the Moons elliptical orbit? c. Use a scale such as 1 cm 108 m to sketch the EarthMoon system at apogee and at perigee and the Moons orbit. (The semiminor axis of the Moons orbit is roughly b = 3.84 108 m.)arrow_forwardA geosynchronous Earth satellite is one that has an orbital period of precisely 1 day. Such orbits are sueful for communication and weather observation because the satellite remains above the same point on Earth (provided it orbits in the equatorial plane in the same direction as Earth’s rotation). Calculate the radius of such an orbit based on the data for Earth in Appendis D.arrow_forwardCalculate the effective gravitational field vector g at Earths surface at the poles and the equator. Take account of the difference in the equatorial (6378 km) and polar (6357 km) radius as well as the centrifugal force. How well does the result agree with the difference calculated with the result g = 9.780356[1 + 0.0052885 sin 2 0.0000059 sin2(2)]m/s2 where is the latitude?arrow_forward
- Suppose the gravitational acceleration at the surface of a certain moon A of Jupiter is 2 m/s2. Moon B has twice the mass and twice the radius of moon A. What is the gravitational acceleration at its surface? Neglect the gravitational acceleration due to Jupiter, (a) 8 m/s2 (b) 4 m/s2 (c) 2 m/s2 (d) 1 m/s2 (e) 0.5 m/s2arrow_forwardAn Earth satellite has its apogee at 2500 km above the surface of Earth and perigee at 500 km above the surface of Earth. At apogee its speed is 730 m/s. What is its speed at perigee? Earth’s radius is 6370 km (see below).arrow_forwardEstimate the gravitational force between two sumo wrestlers, with masses 220 kg and 240 kg, when they are embraced and their centers are 1.2 m apart.arrow_forward
- What is the orbital radius of an Earth satellite having a period of 1.00 h? (b) What is unreasonable about this result?arrow_forwardFor many years, astronomer Percival Lowell searched for a Planet X that might explain some of the perturbations observed in the orbit of Uranus. These perturbations were later explained when the masses of the outer planets and planetoids, particularly Neptune, became better measured (Voyager 2). At the time, however, Lowell had proposed the existence of a Planet X that orbited the Sun with a mean distance of 43 AU. With what period would this Planet X orbit the Sun?arrow_forwardA Molniya orbit is a highly eccentric orbit of a communication satellite so as to provide continuous communications coverage for Scandinavian countries and adjacent Russia. The orbit is positioned so that these countries have the satellite in view for extended periods in time (see below). If a satellite in such an orbit has an apogee at 40,000.0 km as measured from the center of Earth and a velocity of 3.0 km/s, what would be its velocity at perigee measured at 200.0 km altitude?arrow_forward
- A satellite in a geosynchronous circular orbit is 42,164.0 km from the center of Earth. A small asteroid collides with the satellite sending it into an elliptical orbit of apogee 45,000.0 km. What is the speed of the satellite at apogee? Assume its angular momentum is conserved.arrow_forwardAn object of mass m is located on the surface of a spherical planet of mass M and radius R. The escape speed from the planet does not depend on which of the following? (a) M (b) m (c) the density of the planet (d) R (e) the acceleration due to gravity on that planetarrow_forwardSaturns ring system forms a relatively thin, circular disk in the equatorial plane of the planet. The inner radius of the ring system is approximately 92,000 km from the center of the planet, and the outer edge is about 137,000 km from the center of the planet. The mass of Saturn itself is 5.68 1026 kg. a. What is the period of a particle in the outer edge compared with the period of a particle in the inner edge? b. How long does it take a particle in the inner edge to move once around Saturn? c. While this inner-edge particle is completing one orbit abound Saturn, how far around Saturn does a particle on the outer edge move?arrow_forward
