Latex allergy in health care workers. Refer to the Current Allergy & Clinical Immunology (March 2004) study of health care workers who use latex gloves. Exercise 6.112 (p. 351). In addition to the 46 hospital employees who were diagnosed with a latex allergy based on a skin-prick test, another 37 health care workers were diagnosed with the allergy using a latex-specific serum test. Of these 83 workers with confirmed latex allergy, only 36 suspected that they had the allergy when asked on a questionnaire. Make a statement about the likelihood that a health care worker with latex allergy suspects he or she actually has the allergy. Attach a measure of reliability to your inference

- What is meant by the sample space of an experiment?arrow_forwardIn a controlled laboratory experiment, scientists at the University of Minnesota discovered that 25% of a certain strain of rats subjected to a 20% coffee bean diet and then force-fed a powerful cancer-causing chemical later developed cancerous tumors. Would we have reason to believe that the proportion of rats developing tumors when subjected to this diet has increased if the experiment were repeated and 16 of 48 rats developed tumors? Use a 0.05 level of significance.arrow_forward. Although there is a popular belief that herbal remedies such as Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng may improve learning and memory in healthy adults, these effects are usually not supported by wellcontrolled research (Persson, Bringlov, Nilsson, and Nyberg, 2004). In a typical study, a researcher obtains a sample of n = 16 participants and has each person take the herbal supplements every day for 90 days. At the end of the 90 days, each person takes a standardized memory test. For the general population, scores from the test form a normal distribution with a mean of μ = 50 and a standard deviation of σ = 12. The sample of research participants had an average of M = 54. Assuming a two-tailed test, state the null hypothesis in a sentence that includes the two variables being examined. Using the standard 4-step procedure, conduct a two-tailed hypothesis test with α = .05 to evaluate the effect of the supplements.arrow_forward
- A study, which randomly surveyed 3,700 households and drew on this information from the IRS, found that 79% of households have conducted at least one IRA rollover from an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Suppose a recent random sample of 90 households in a certain county was taken and respondents were asked whether they had ever funded an IRA account with a rollover from an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Based on the sample data below, can you conclude at the 0.10 level of significance that the proportion of households in the county that have funded an IRA with a rollover is different from the proportion for all households reported in the study? 77 respondents said they had funded an account; 13 respondents said they had notarrow_forwardAccording to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 2% of the 771,556,886 travelers who utilized 440 federalized airports in 2017 waited more than 20 minutes in the TSA security line. The File TSAWaitTimes contains waiting Times in TSA security lines at a major U.S. airport for a recent random sample 10,531 travelers. Use these Data to test the hypothesis that the proportion of travelers waiting more than 20 minutes in TSA security lines at this airport is the same as the national proportion at α = .05 Data given: Time In Line Mean 11.99496 Median 11.97536 Standard Deviation 3.992043 Confidence Level(95.0%) 0.076253 Provide a 95% confidence interval with interpretationarrow_forwardA low-level CDC bureaucrat wants to please his boss by gathering evidence thatthe current government-mandated shutdown of society is not causing people’s mentalhealth to deteriorate, so that it can safely be continued for several years if anyexpert says it’s necessary. He polls a random sample of 1600 citizens, gathering data on such items asincome loss, weight gain, access to toilet paper, hours spent binge-watchingNetflix, and number of injuries caused by household fights, and compiles all thisinto a scientifically-weighted “misery index”.The mean misery index from the sample is 99.2; it seems reasonable to use apopulation standard deviation σ = 19.1.a) Does this information provide significant evidence (at the 5% level) that thenationwide mean misery index is less than 100? Set up appropriate null andalternative hypotheses, calculate the appropriate test statistic, find the P-value,and state your conclusion. After 6 months, periodontal status improved in 15 patients, declined in 8, and remained the same in 5.9.1 Assess the impact of the program statistically (use a two-sided test).arrow_forwardFor a sample of 400 correctional officers at Lucasville State Prison, a researcher believes there is a relationship between “years on the job” and “willingness to help raise money for adult charities.” Using the following data, test the null hypothesis at the .01 level of significance that willingness to help raise donations does not differ by length of service as a correctional officer. In so doing, identify: (1) the research and null hypothesis, (2) the critical value needed to reject the null, (3) the decision that you made upon analyzing the data, and (4) the conclusion you have drawn based on the decision you have made.arrow_forward
- According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, the proportion of fatal traffic accidents in the United States in which the driver had a positive blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is .36. Suppose a random sample of 105 traffic fatalities in the state of Hawaii results in 51 that involved a positive BAC. D) Check whether the conditions for hypothesis testing using the P-value approach are meet.arrow_forwardAccording to the February 2008 Federal Trade Commission report on consumer fraud and identity theft, 23% of all complaints in 2007 were for identity theft. In that year, Alaska had 321 complaints of identity theft out of 1,432 consumer complaints ("Consumer fraud and," 2008). Does this data provide enough evidence to show that Alaska had a lower proportion of identity theft than 23%? Test at the 5% level. viii) Comparing p-value and α value, which is the correct decision to make for this hypothesis test? A. Reject H B. Fail to reject Ho C. Accept Ho D. Accept HA Enter letter corresponding to correct answer. (ix) Select the statement that most correctly interprets the result of this test: A. The result is statistically significant at .05 level of significance. Evidence supports the claim that the proportion of complaints due to identity theft in Alaska is less than 23%. B. The result is statistically significant at .05 level of significance. A 15-item test of general knowledge about sex and health was administered to random samples of teens who are sexually inactive, teens who are sexually active but only with a single partner ("going steady"), and teens who are sexually active with more than one partner.
