Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The number and kind of stereoisomers formed when given molecule is treated in presence of
Concept Introduction:
Geometric isomers: Two atoms with the same side location of the double bond are called cis isomers and two atoms with opposite side locations of the double bond are called Trans isomers.
R and S nomenclature: it is used to assign the molecule using CIP (Cahn-Ingold-Prelog) rules.
The CIP rules are as follows:
Select the chiral carbon and assign the numbers according to the decreasing atomic mass of atoms attached to it.
If the numbering follows clockwise direction then the molecule is termed as R and if it follows anti-clockwise direction then molecule is termed as S.
(b)

- The reaction of 1-bromopropane and sodium hydroxide in ethanol occurs by an SN2mechanism. What happens to the rate of this reaction under the following conditions?(a) The concentration of NaOH is doubled.(b) The concentrations of both NaOH and 1-bromopropane are doubled.(c) The volume of the solution in which the reaction is carried out is doubled.arrow_forwardDraw the product and indicate the stereochemistry when the given alcohol is treated with each reagent: (a) HBr; (b) PBr3; (c) HCl; (d) SOCl2 and pyridine.arrow_forwardDraw the structure of two alkenes that would yield 1‑methylcyclohexanol when treated with Hg(OAc)2Hg(OAc)2 in water, then NaBH4NaBH4arrow_forward
- (a) Why is the following reaction a poor method for the synthesis of t-butyl propyl ether? (b) What would be the major product from this reaction? (c) Propose a better synthesis of r-butyl propyl ether. ÇH, does not give ÇH, CH,CH,CH,-O: *Na + CH,-C-Br > CH,-C-o-CH,CH,CH, CH, CH, t-butyl propyl ether sodium propoxide 1-butyl bromidearrow_forwardDraw the structure of (2Z, 6E)-3-ethyl-7-methyldeca-2, 6-dien-1-ol, the sex pheromone of the codling moth, a common agricultural pest that destroys apple crops. By spraying an apple orchard with this pheromone, the mating of male and female moths is disrupted, and moth populations can be controlled.arrow_forwardWhat is the major product formed when 3-methyl-1-butene is treated with Hg(C2H3O2)2 in a THF/ethanol mixture followed by NaBH4 in base?arrow_forward
- Give IUPAC names for the following alkyl halides: (please answer letters d, c, d)arrow_forwardOne compound that contributes to the “seashore smell” at beaches in Hawai‘i is dictyopterene D', a component of a brown edible seaweed called limu lipoa. Hydrogenation of dictyopterene D' with excess H2 in the presence of a Pd catalyst forms butylcycloheptane. Ozonolysis with O3 followed by (CH3)2S forms CH2(CHO)2, HCOCH2CH(CHO)2, and CH3CH2CHO. What are possible structures of dictyopterene D'?arrow_forwardQ3. 2-Bromopentane, when treated with alcoholic KOH yields a mixture of three alkenes A, B and C. Identify A, B and C. Which is predominant? Q4 Which statement below about Sn1 reactions is incorrect? (A) SN1 reactions are stepwise and have intermediates. (B) The slow step in a SN1 reaction is formation of the carbocation intermediate. (C) SN1 reactions have first order kinetics which means only the alkyl halide is involved in the rate limiting step. (D) The products of a SN1 reaction will be a pair of enantiomers. (E) An aprotic solvent is best for Sn1 reactions as they tend to help stabilize carbocation intermediates.arrow_forward
- A 2-bromobutane react with methanol and form a enantiomeric pair of 2-methoxybutane. Draw the structures of the enntiomeric pairs of ethers.arrow_forwardGive reasons for the following :(i) Ethyl iodide undergoes SN2 reaction faster than ethyl bromide.(ii) (±) 2-Butanol is optically inactive.(iii) C—X bond length in halobenzene is smaller than C—X bond length in CH3—X.arrow_forwardReaction of this bicycloalkene with bromine in carbon tetrachloride gives a trans dibro- mide. In both (a) and (b), the bromine atoms are trans to each other. However, only one of these products is formed. CH3 CH3 CH3 Br Br CH,Cl, + Br2 or Br Br (a) (b) Which trans dibromide is formed? How do you account for the fact that it is formed to the exclusion of the other trans dibromide?arrow_forward
