Interpretation:
The amount of moles
Concept Introduction:
The Mole and
•For convenience in considering reactions and calculating quantities, chemists think in terms of moles of substances.
•A mole is a quantity of particles defined as Avogadro’s number of particles or formula units of elements or compounds.
•The molecular or formula weight of a compound is the sum of the mass of all atoms in the formula.
•A mole also happens to be 22.4 L of an ideal gas under standard conditions, so 22.4 L of ideal gas represent one gram formula weight of the compound.

- Refer to chemical equation shown here to explain why carbon dioxide dissolved in water acts as a buffer. H2O+CO2<>H2CO3<>H++HCO3arrow_forwardThe substance oxygen has the following properties: normal melting point: 54.8 K normal boiling point: 90.2 K triple point: 1.50×10-3 atm, 54.4 K critical point: 49.8 atm, 154.6 K A sample of oxygen is initially at a pressure of 58.9 atm and a temperature of 96.9 K. The pressure on the sample is reduced to 1.50×10-3 atm at a constant temperature of 96.9 K. Which of the following are true?Choose all that apply The sample is initially a liquid. The gas initially present will solidify. The final state of the substance is a gas. One or more phase changes will occur. The final state of the substance is a solid.arrow_forwardHuman blood has a pH of approximately 7.4 due to the carbonic acid/bicarbonate ion (H2CO3/HCO3−) buffer system. Any pH changes below 6.8 or above 7.8 can lead to death! Carbonic acid dissociates to form water and carbon dioxide in the equilibrium shown below. This process is crucial in respiration.H2CO3 (aq) ⇋ CO2 (g) + H2O pKa1 = 2.77 Carbonic acid dissociates in water to form the bicarbonate ion and the hydroxonium ion by the following equilibrium reaction:H2CO3 (aq) + H2O ⇋ H3O(aq)+ + HCO3− pKa2 = 3.70 (ii) Explain how a 25% increase in carbonic acid levels may impact the availability of lead if a tainted calcium supplement ends up on the local marketarrow_forward
