The freezing temperature of 0.50mNaCl and sucrose solution has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Depression in freezing point:

At freezing point solid phase of the solvent will be in equilibrium with liquid phase.  When solute molecule is added, it will interfere with the rate at which the liquid molecules associate to form solid state, hence lower the freezing point of the solution.

    ΔTf=kf(mparticles)

Where, ΔTf difference in temperature of pure solvent and solution, kf is freezing point depression constant.

The freezing temperature of 0.50mNaCl and sucrose solution is -1.86oC and -0.93oC respectively.

Explanation of Solution

kf for aqueous solution is 1.86oCm.

NaCl being ionic compound, dissociate to form two particles.  So 0.50mNaCl is 1m(0.5m×2) particles.

So freezing temperature of 0.50mNaCl  can be calculated as follows,

    ΔTf=kf(mparticles)=(1.86oCm)(1m)=1.86oCT1T2=1.86oC

Where T1 is the freezing point of pure water and T2 is the freezing point of the solution.

Therefore freezing point of the solution is given below.

    T1T2=1.86oC0oCT2=1.86oCT2=0oC1.86oC=-1.86oC.

Freezing temperature of the sodium chloride solution is -1.86oC.

The freezing temperature of 1.50m sucrose can be calculated as follows,

    ΔTf=kf(mparticles)=(1.86oCm)(0.5m)=0.93oCT1T2=0.93oC

Where T1 is the freezing point of pure water and T2 is the freezing point of the sucrose solution.

Therefore freezing point of the solution is given below.

    T1T2=0.93oC0oCT2=0.93oCT2=0oC0.93oC=-0.93oC.

Freezing temperature of sucrose solution is -0.93oC.
