To review:
The function of the shivering in body temperature maintenance.
Given:
An individual is outside on a cool fall day and feels cold; however, he or she thinks little of it until they notice that they shivering.
Introduction
Muscles are the tissues in the body that are fibrous in nature. They are made up of muscle cells that have myofibrils that are key for the contraction. There are three types of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. The major function of muscles is to contract resulting in the production of movement. But apart from that muscles also participate in the generation of heat.

- You are training athletes for the 100-meter dash. They need muscles specialized for speed and strength, not endurance. What muscle characteristics would your training regimen aim to develop? How would you alter it to train a long-distance swimmer?arrow_forwardIn a general sense, how do skeletal muscles produce movement?arrow_forwardStaying fit is important. People think that one aspect of staying fit is to develop big muscles in their arms and legs. Some people would even take muscle builders or enhancers such as steroids so that they would have a well-muscled body. What would you say to a classmate who wants to stay fit? Would you emphasize the development of muscles to him or her? Why or why not?arrow_forward
