Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The term ion needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Ions can be positively charged or negatively charged. Ions with positive charge are known as cations and ions with negative charge are known as anion.
Answer to Problem 73A
An ion is an atom or molecules either positively charged or negatively charged.
Explanation of Solution
Ions are atoms or groups of atoms with an overall charge. The charge can be positive or negative. When sodium and chlorine atoms form bond, sodium gives its electron to chlorine thus, sodium gets positive charge and chlorine gets negative charge. Thus, NaCl is formed. Na is positively charged that means cation and Cl negatively charged that means anion.
