Concept explainers
A spring-loaded toy gun exerts a variable force on a plastic ball as the spring expands. Consider a horizontal spring and a ball of mass m whose position when barely touching a fully expanded spring is x = 0. The ball is pushed to the left, compressing the spring. You'll learn in Chapter 9 that the spring force on the ball, when the ball is at position x (which is negative), can be written as (Fsp)x= -kx, where k is called the spring constant. The minus sign is needed to make the x-component of the force positive. Suppose the ball is initially pushed to x0= -L, then released and shot to the right.
a. Use what you've learned in calculus to prove that
b. Find an expression, in terms of m, k, and L, for the speed of the ball as it comes off the spring at x = 0.

- Problems 67. 70. 71. and 72 are grouped. A A block of mass M is placed on a frictionless plane. The plane is inclined at an angle , and the block is a distance d from its end. Of course, we would expect the block to slip down the plane. Suppose we revolve the incline around the vertical axis shown in Figure P6.67 instead. At what period of revolution will the block remain in place on the plane? FIGURE P6.67 Problems 67. 71. and 72.arrow_forwardOn a horizontal air track, a glider of mass m carries a -shaped post. The post supports a small dense sphere, also of mass m, hanging just above the top of the glider on a cord of length L. The glider and sphere are initially at rest with the cord vertical. A constant horizontal force of magnitude F is applied to the glider, moving it through displacement x1; then the force is removed. During the time interval when the force is applied, the sphere moves through a displacement with horizontal component x2. (a) Find the horizontal component of the velocity of the center of mass of the glidersphere system when the force is removed. (b) After the force is removed, the glider continues to move on the track and the sphere swings back and forth, both without friction. Find an expression for the largest angle the cord makes with the vertical.arrow_forwardA block with mass m1 hangs from a rope that is extended over an ideal pulley and attached to a second block with mass m2 that sits on a ledge. The second block is also connected to a third block with mass m3 by a second rope that hangs over a second ideal pulley as shown in Figure P5.47. If the friction between the ledge and the second block is negligible, m1 = 3.00 kg, m2 = 5.00 kg, and m3 = 8.00 kg, find the magnitude of the tension in each rope and the acceleration of each block. The block moves along a frictionless horizontal table and pushes another spring, k2 = 2.3 N/m , to the maximum deflection x. If the initial deflection of the spring k1 is 0.050 m, what is the maximum deflection of spring k2? Consider that the masses of the springs are negligible.arrow_forwardA ball having mass 3.2kg and velocity 9.4m/s travels due east.
