Concept Introduction:
An atom has a positively charged nucleus thatis surrounded by negatively charged electrons. The electrons revolve around the nucleus in their orbitals (or shells). Each orbital has subshells.
The arrangement of electrons in the orbitals of an atom is called an electronic configuration. It is written with the help of quantum numbers.
Every electron occupies the orbitals in the increasing of their energy.
According to the Pauli Exclusion Principle, each orbital of a subshell cannot occupy more than two electrons.
s-orbital can have 0–2 electrons.
p-orbital can have 0–6 electrons.
d-orbital can have 0–10 electrons.
F-orbital can have 0–14 electrons.
