Organophosphates (organic compounds containing phosphate groups) are commonly used as insecticides to improve crop yield. Organophosphates typically interfere with nerve signal transmission by inhibiting the enzymes that degrade transmitter molecules. They affect humans and other vertebrates as well as insects. Thus, the use of organophosphate pesticides poses some health risks. On the other hand, these molecules break down rapidly upon exposure to air and sunlight. As a consumer, what level of risk are you willing to accept in exchange for an abundant and affordable food supply? Explain your thinking.

- What is meant by a binding site? Select one: The area of a macromolecule target that is occupied by a chemical messenger when it binds The area of a macromolecule target that is occupied by a drug when it binds The area of a macromolecule target that is occupied by an agonist when it binds All the answers are correctarrow_forward“Antioxidants are key molecules in slowing down cellular aging”- Briefly explain this statement at your own words.arrow_forwardYou are now ready to complete the first task about Choices in Biology. In this Activity you have collected details about the consequences of a heavy metal pollutant on human health. You have also identified a cellular biotechnology that uses a microorganism in removing it. Your task is to research one heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin that affects humans. Using good Self-Regulation skills, you may choose to research the same heavy metal you have been describing in this Activity. Alternatively, review some of the other heavy metals from the class discussion. You may find that the effect of the heavy metal you can describe the best is not the first one you began researching. As you continue your research, keep track of your sources. The important details to collect are: What is the environmental source of the heavy metal? What are the symptoms of being exposed to this heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin? What gland, hormone or neuronal…arrow_forward
- You are a physician treating a patient with cancer. Based on our lecture, which of the following drugs might be useful to look into to treat the patient? a drug that shifts the metabolism of the cancer cells toward oxidative phosphorylation, a drug that shifts the metabolism of the cancer cells toward glycolysis. a drug that activates cell division in the cancer cells. a drug that activates signaling downstream of growth factorsarrow_forwardAmoeboid cells that migrate through our tissues, such as the class of white blood cells known as neutrophils, often do so in a directed manner, triggered, for instance, by chemical signals released by pathogens such as bacteria. Directed migration in response to a chemical stimulus is known as chemotaxis. Part of an efficient chemotactic response is the ability of cells to polarize. As is the case with our structurally-polar polymers like F-actin or microtubules, polarization here refers to an asymmetry in the cells, rather than an electrical charge. In this case, it involves one part of the cell becoming the “front” (or leading edge) and another the rear. In a well-polarized, migrating cell, it’s been observed that an active form of Rac (which, in turn, can activate ARP 2/3) is concentrated towards the front of the cell, whereas an active form of Rho (which, in turn, can activate formin, inhibit cofilin/ADP, and activate myosin II) is found toward the rear of the cell. Based on your…arrow_forwardAmoeboid cells that migrate through our tissues, such as the class of white blood cells known as neutrophils, often do so in a directed manner, triggered, for instance, by chemical signals released by pathogens such as bacteria.
