Chapter 6.15, Problem 45P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The alkene required to synthesis given compound should be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Due to addition of peroxyacid to an alkene, the resulting oxygen atom gets added to the two sp2 carbon at same time.  So it is syn addition.

Syn addition of cis alkene forms cis enantiomer.  Syn addition of trans alkene give trans enantiomer.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Other epoxide formed from the given reaction has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

The addition of peroxyacid to an alkene resulting oxygen atom added to the two sp2 carbon at same time.  Thus oxygen can add from above the plane and below the plane.  So the addition of peroxyacid to an alkenes gives two stereoisomers.  Syn addition of cis alkene forms cis enantiomer.  Syn addition of trans alkene give trans enantiomer.
