Therefore the length of the textbook is obtained by dividing the area by the given height as follows-

The front and back cover are each $6x$ units long and the spine is $2x$ units long.

Now, subtracting $14x$

  $14x+6-14x=6$

Half of this length is width of each flap.

Therefore, the required width is $\frac{6}{2}=3$ inches.
