Chapter 6.3, Problem 6MI
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The reason for water’s polarity and the effects of polarity.

Introduction:

Polarity is a division of electric charge prompting a particle or its chemical groups having an electric dipole second, with a negatively charged end and a positively charged end.

Expert Solution & Answer

Explanation of Solution

Polar particles must contain polar bonds because of a distinction in electronegativity between the bonded atoms.

    Polarity of water
Reason of polarity Effect of polarity
Water is a polar because of the electrons of the hydrogen atoms get "pulled" towards the electrons of the oxygen atom. This makes a region of positive charge on the hydrogen particles and the negative charge on the other end of the molecule, which is the oxygen atom.

Due to difference in electronegativity of hydrogen and oxygen, oxygen pulls electron and gains slight negative charge

Polarity makes water a good solvent, gives it the ability to stick to itself (cohesion), stick to other substances (adhesion), and have surface tension (due to hydrogen bonding).
