One of the best ways to learn how to solve a word problem in algebra is to design word problems of your own. Creating a word problem makes you very aware of precisely how much information is needed to solve the problem. You must also focus on the way to present information to a reader and on how much information to give. As you write your problem, you gain skills that will help you solve problems created by others. The group should design five different word problems that can be solved using linear equations. All of the problems should be can different topics. For example, the group should not have a more than one problem on price reduction. The group should turn in both the problems and their algebraic solutions.

- The weekly news magazine has a big story naming the Person of the Year and the editor wants the magazine to be printed as soon as possible. She has asked the printer to run an extra printing press to get the printing done more quickly, Press #1 takes 6 hours more than Press #2 to do the job and when both presses are running they can print the job in 4 hours. How long does it take for each press to print the job alone?arrow_forwardWrite a uniform motion problem similar to Example 5.42 that relates to where you live with your friends or family members. Then translate to a system of equations and solve it.arrow_forwardTake a handful of two types of coins, and write a problem similar to Example 4.25 relating the total number of coins and their total value. Set up a system of equations to describe your situation and then solve it.arrow_forward
- When you start to solve a word problem, how do you decide what to let the variable represent?arrow_forwardThe perimeter of a triangle is 30 in. The longest side is 2 less than 3 times the shortest side and the other side is 2 more than twice the shortest side. Find the length of each side.arrow_forwardUse the system of three equations in three variables to solve each problem. Work schedules A college student earns 198.50 per week working three part-time jobs. Half of his 30-hour work week is spent cooking hamburgers at a fast-food chain, earning 5.70 per hour. In addition, the student earns 6.30 per hour doing janitorial work. How many hours per week does the student work at each jobarrow_forward
- If you are solving a break-even analysis and there is no break-even point, explain what this means for the company. How should they ensure there is a break-even point?arrow_forwardOne side of a triangle is seven inches more than the first side. The third side is four inches less than three times the first. The perimeter is 28 inches. Find the length of the three sides of the triangle.arrow_forward
