Exercises 11–15 refer to diagnostic tests. A false negative in a diagnostic test is a test result that is negative even though the patient has the condition. A false positive, on the other hand, is a test result that is positive although the patient does not have the condition.
Drug Screening A drug-testing laboratory produces false negative results 2% of the time and false positive results 5% of the time. Suppose that the laboratory has been hired by a company in which 10% of the employees use drugs.
(a) If an employee tests positive for drug use, what is the probability that they actually use drugs?
(b) What is the probability that a nondrug user will test positive for drug use twice in a row?
(c) What is the probability that someone who tests positive twice in a row is not a drug user?

- A rodentologist investigating various aspects of the aging process wanted to see whether staying “lean and mean” that is, being under normal body weight would lengthen life span. She randomly assigned newborn rats from a highly inbred line to one of three diets: (1) unlimited access to food, (2) 90% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat, (3) 80% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat. She maintained the rats on the three diets throughout their lives and recorded their life spans (in years). Car Model Price Average Mileage (mpg) Ford Escape S model (conventional) $26,510 28 city/ 34 highway Ford Escape SE (hybrid) $29,170 44 city/ 37 highway What is the annual cost to drive the conventional Ford Escape for 10,000 miles (5,000 city driving and 5,000 highway) if gas costs $3.57 per gallon? What is the annual cost to drive the hybrid model Ford Escape for 10,000 miles (5,000 city driving and 5,000 highway) if gas costs $3.57 per gallon? How much money would you save annually if you bought the hybrid model instead of the conventional Ford Escape, assuming you drove 10,000 miles each year? How many years of driving the more fuel-efficient hybrid would it take for you to make up difference in its higher sticker price over the price of the conventional model?arrow_forwardConsider the system below, and assume that each component functions independently of the others with probability p = 0.8. What is the probability that the entire system works?arrow_forward
- Economists theorize that the recent recession has affected men more than women because men are typically employed in industries that have been hit hardest by the recession. Women, on the other hand, are typically employed in services which are considered more recession resistant. A sample of 165 men and a sample of 140 women were drawn. In those samples, 20 men were unemployed, and 13 of the women were unemployed. Complete parts a and b below. This time the merchant has on hand 30 kilograms of Colombian beans, 15 kilograms of Kenyan beans, and 15 kilograms of French roast beans. Suppose one bag of the house blend produces a profit of $0.50, one bag of the special blend produces a profit of $1.50, and one bag of the gourmet blend produces a profit of $2.00. How many bags of each type should the merchant prepare if he wants to use up all of the beans and maximize his profit? What is the maximum profit?arrow_forward
