Exercises 11–15 refer to diagnostic tests. A false negative in a diagnostic test is a test result that is negative even though the patient has the condition. A false positive, on the other hand, is a test result that is positive although the patient does not have the condition.
Pregnancy Test An over-the-counter pregnancy test claims to be 99% accurate. Actually, what the insert says is that if the test is performed properly, it is 99% sure to detect a pregnancy.
(a) What is the probability of a false negative?
(b) Let us assume that the probability is 98% that the test result is negative for a woman who is not pregnant. If the woman estimates that her chances of being pregnant are about 40% and the test result is positive, what is the probability that she is actually pregnant?

- Perform a hypothesis test, testing the hypothesis that swearing alters pain tolerance.arrow_forwardSleep apnea is a condition in which the sufferers stop breathing momentarily while they are asleep. This condition results in lack of sleep and extreme fatigue during waking hours. A current estimate is that 11.911.9 million out of the 312.7312.7 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, or approximately 3.8%3.8%. A safety commission is concerned about the percentage of commercial truck drivers who suffer from sleep apnea. They do not have any reason to believe that it would be higher or lower than the population’s percentage. To test the claim that the percentage of commercial truck drivers who suffer from sleep apnea is not 3.8%3.8%, a simple random sample of 347347 commercial truck drivers is examined by a medical expert, who concludes that 66 suffer from sleep apnea. Does this evidence support the claim that the percentage of commercial truck drivers who suffer from sleep apnea is not 3.8%3.8%? Use a 0.020.02 level of significance. Step 3 of 4 : Find the p-value. - A rodentologist investigating various aspects of the aging process wanted to see whether staying “lean and mean” that is, being under normal body weight would lengthen life span. She randomly assigned newborn rats from a highly inbred line to one of three diets: (1) unlimited access to food, (2) 90% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat, (3) 80% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat. She maintained the rats on the three diets throughout their lives and recorded their life spans (in years). Have you ever searched for the cheapest flight so that you could visit a special friend? This example provides some of the analysis that leads to results such as overbooked flights and reduced fares on certain flights. Suppose that you are in charge of marketing airline seats for a major carrier. Four days before the flight date you have 16 seats remaining on the plane. You know from past experience data that 80% of the people that purchase tickets in this time period will actually show up for the flight. a. If you sell 20 extra tickets, what is the probability that you will overbook the flight or have at least 1 empty seat? b. If you sell 18 extra tickets, what is the probability that you will overbook the flight or have at least 1 empty seat?arrow_forwardBusiness Calculus 2Section 11.2: Continuous Random Variablesarrow_forward
