Concept explainers
Concept introduction:
Decision making plays an important role in the management. The decisions taken by managers are called managerial decisions. Managerial Decisions are decisions taken by managers for the operations of a firm. These decisions include setting target growth rates, hiring or firing employees, and deciding what products to sell. Manager’s decisions are taken on the basis of quantitative as well as the qualitative measures. The managerial decision includes the decisions like make or buy, accept or reject new offers, sell or further process etc. These decisions are taken on the basis of relevant costs.
Relevant costs are the costs that are relevant for any decision making. Relevant costs are helpful for take managerial decisions like make or buy, accept or reject new offers, sell or further process etc.
Two basic types of the relevant costs are as follows:
- Out-of-pocket costs
- Opportunity costs
To calculate:
The contribution margin per unit, contribution margin per hour and decision of which product to be produced

- Sports Butts makes basketballs and footballs in a three-step process. Unfortunately, the stern insertion process has been identified as a bottleneck. Each basketball has a contribution margin of $15.00 and each football has a contribution margin of $4.00. The stem insertion equipment can make 10 basketballs or 30 footballs in one hour. A. If demand for both products is unlimited and the stem insertion machine capacity cannot be expanded, which product should be produced? B. It demand for each ball is limited to 9,000 balls and there are 4,000 hours available on the machine, how many of each product should be produced?arrow_forwardA number of costs are listed below that may be relevant in a decision faced by the management of Bulacan Company. Bulacan normally runs at capacity and the old Model CY1000 machine is the company’s constraint. Management is considering purchasing a new machine, Model CZ4000 and the old one, CY1000 will be sold. The new machine is more efficient and can produce 20% more units than the old one. Demand for Bulacan’s product is greater than what they can supply. If the new machine is purchased, there should be a reduction in maintenance costs however the new machine is very costly and the company will need to borrow money in order to make the purchase. The increase in volume will be large enough to require increases in fixed selling expense, but general administrative expenses will remain unchanged. Required: For each cost listed determine whether the cost is relevant or irrelevant to the decision to replace the CY1000. a. Sales Revenue b. Direct materials c. Direct labor d. Variable…arrow_forwardDetermining the Optimal Product Mix with One Constrained Resource and a Sales Constraint Comfy Fit Company manufactures two types of university sweatshirts, the Swoop and the Rufus, with unit contribution margins of $5 and $15, respectively. Regardless of type, each sweatshirt must be fed through a stitching machine to affix the appropriate university logo. The firm leases seven machines that each provides 1,000 hours of machine time per year. Each Swoop sweatshirt requires 6 minutes of machine time, and each Rufus sweatshirt requires 30 minutes of machine time. Assume that a maximum of 50,440 units of each sweatshirt can be sold. Required: If required, round your answers to the nearest whole number. 1. What is the contribution margin per hour of machine time for each type of sweatshirt? Contribution Margin Swoop $ Rufus $ 2. What is the optimal mix of sweatshirt? Optimal Mix Swoop units Rufus units 3. What is the total contribution margin earned for the optimal…arrow_forward
- Theory of constraints: Shera company is manufacturing furniture, cabinets and tables in particular. Currently, the company can sell as many units as it can produce. However, it is constrained by its availability of machine-hour capacity. On a per unit basis, sales price for cabinets and tables are $80 and $160, respectively. With variable costs of $60 and $155. Moreover, it requires 1 1/2 machine hours to manufacture cabinets while 2 1/2 machine hours are needed for tables. What is the contribution per unit of tables and cabinets considering the limited machine hoursarrow_forwardPerfect Furniture is a manufacturer of kitchen tables andchairs. Th e company is currently deciding between two newmethods for making kitchen tables. Th e fi rst process is estimatedto have a fi xed cost of $80,000 and a variable cost of $75 per unit.Th e second process is estimated to have a fi xed cost of $100,000and a variable cost of $60 per unit.(a) Graphically plot the total costs for both methods.Identify which ranges of product volume are best foreach method.(b) If the company produces 500 tables a year, which methodprovides a lower total cost?arrow_forwardManaging a Constrained Resource Portsmouth Company makes fine colonial reproduction furniture. Upholstered furniture is one of its major product lines and the bottleneck on this production line is time in the upholstery shop. Upholstering is a craft that takes years of experience to master and the demand for upholstered furniture far exceeds the company’s capacity in the upholstering shop. Information concerning three of the company’s upholstered chairs appears below: Required: 1. More time could be made available in the upholstery shop by asking the employees who work in this shop to work overtime. Assuming that this extra time would be used to produce sofas, up to how much of a premium should the company be willing to pay in terms of an overtime premium per hour to keep the upholstery shop open after normal working hours? 2. A small nearby upholstering company has offered to upholster furniture for Portsmouth at a fixed charge of $45 per hour. The management of Portsmouth is…arrow_forward

There are two different manufacturing methods available to produce Diazinon. Either by using a process or an order base method. The assembling technique won't influence the quality or deals of the item. The evaluated manufacturing expenses of the two strategies are as per the following: Process base Order base Variable manufacturing cost per unit..................... Rs14.00 Rs.17.60 Fixed manufacturing cost per year ......................Rs. 2,440,000 Rs. 1,320,000 The organization's statistical surveying office has suggested an initial selling cost of Rs.35 per unit for Diazinon. The yearly fixed selling and admin costs…arrow_forwardA furniture company manufactures desks and chairs. Each desk uses four units of wood, and each chair uses three units of wood. A desk contributes $250 to profit, and a chair contributes $145. Marketing restrictions require that the number of chairs produced be at least four times the number of desks produced. There are 2,000 units of wood available. Use Solver to maximize the company's profit. a. What is the optimized company's profit? Use SolverTable to see what happens to the decision variables and the total profit when the availability of wood varies from 1,000 to 3,000 in 100-unit increments. Based on your findings, how much would the company be willing to pay for each extra unit of wood over its current 2,000 units? How much profit would the company lose if it lost any of its current 2,000 units? Round the answer to a whole dollar amount.arrow_forwardDetermining the Optimal Product Mix with One Constrained Resource Comfy Fit Company manufactures two types of university sweatshirts, the Swoop and the Rufus, with unit contribution margins of $11 and $22, respectively. Regardless of type, each sweatshirt must be fed through a stitching machine to affix the appropriate university logo. The firm leases seven machines that each provides 1,200 hours of machine time per year. Each Swoop sweatshirt requires 12 minutes of machine time, and each Rufus sweatshirt requires 27 minutes of machine time. Assume that there are no other constraints.
