WRITE ABOUT A THEME: INTERACTIONS A human pancreatic cell obtains O2—and necessary molecules such as glucose, amino acids, and cholesterol—from its environment, and it releases CO2 as a waste product. In response to hormonal signals, the cell secretes digestive enzymes. It also regulates its ion concentrations by exchange with its environment. Based on what you have just learned about the structure and function of cellular membranes, write a short essay (100-150 words) to describe how such a cell accomplishes these interactions with its environment.

- Test Your Understanding 10.INTERPRET DATA GLUT 4 is a glucose transporter that functions in adipose (fat) cell plasma membranes. An analysis of adipose cells exposed to insulin showed that a single cell could import glucose at a maximum rate of about 1108 molecules/second. Under the same conditions, unstimulated cells could only transport a maximum of about 1107 molecules/second. What does this finding tell you about the relative number of GLUT 4 transporters functioning in the plasma membranes of stimulated versus unstimulated cells?arrow_forwardMatch the following cellular features and activities with the properties of cells. Cell structure is highly complex and organized structurally. Cell posseses genetic information. Cells engage in metabolism. Cells sense and respond to changes in the environment. A. Mistakes in the genetic material are called mutation. B. Protein receptors on cell membranes receive specific ligands that "communicate" the presence of a simulus or stimuli. C. Cells contain "blueprints" for constructing cellular structures, for rrunning cellular activities and for making more of themselves. D. All living systems are capable of doing "work" in whatever form. E. Cell…arrow_forwardFish Cell Physiology Discuss and compare the energy produced from cellular fuels such as saturated fatty acids unsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose. If you have to maximize the energy utilization of your fish what particular compound (saturated fatty acids unsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose) would you provide as the energy source, discuss the scientific principle of your answerarrow_forward

- Based on the picture, the primary function of molecule #14 in an animal cell is: A. Structural support B. Mechanical contraction C. Energy storage D. Cellular transportarrow_forwardWhich statements are consistent with the fluid-mosaic model of membranes? (a) All membrane proteins are bound to the interior of the membrane. (b) Both proteins and lipids undergo transverse (flip-flop) diffusion from the inside to the outside of the membrane. (c) Some proteins and lipids undergo lateral diffusion along the inner or outer surface of the membrane. (d) Carbohydrates are covalently bonded to the outside of the membrane. (e) The term mosaic refers to the arrangement of the lipids alone.arrow_forwardThe micrographs of areolar and adipose tissue both show cells (fibroblasts and adipocytes), but the density of cells in the two tissues is very different. What do you think causes this difference?arrow_forward
