To Determine:
If the pressure to generate revenue through tuition increases and other means create ethical tension among the need to generate revenue, student retention and grading
Case Summary: Grade inflation is a common concern in Colleges and Universities these days where 75% of students achieve an A. Colleges and Universities need to take serious steps towards checking on grade inflation as this can sap away the student’s motivation to work hard. Organizations also find it difficult to evaluate candidates’ transcripts if grades are inflated. Also for teachers and professors it is less motivating to accurately assess and estimate student’s performance and to teach them through strong grading feedback.
Interpretation: There has been a dramatic decrease in the state funding of many schools which has in turned increased pressure on the administrators to generate revenue through tuition fees and other means which has created ethical tensions.
Adequate Information: The schools which stand against grade inflation and produce students with lower grades will no longer look as attractive to potential students, so enrollment of students and thus revenue will suffer.
