How sleep deprived might demonstrate aspects of expectancy theory and how arranging “nap rooms” for sleep deprived employees demonstrate aspects of equity theory.
Case Summary: Sleepiness is a costly organizational problem we can no longer overlook. It lowers performance and productivity and increases unethical behavior, accidents and injuries. The effect of sleepiness affects the organization which in turn leads to longer working hours and thus more sleepiness. Thus, it seems to be a vicious cycle. Researches on sleep deprivation has found that sleep deprived and tired workers faces more of back pain, heart diseases, less productivity, depression, anxiety and dissatisfaction from their jobs.
Adequate Information: Some companies are arranging nap rooms at work as a solution to problem and a survey of 600 companies showed that 6% of those companies had dedicated nap rooms for their employees. Conducted by NSF, in a poll of 1508 workers, 34% of workers said that they were allowed to nap at work.
