Allied Health The basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the minimum amount of energy needed in a 24-hour period to keep the body functioning. The BMR is based on a person’s gender, age, weight, and height. One formula used to calculated the BMR for a woman is
where w is the woman’s weight in kilograms, h is her height in centimeters, a is her age in years, and the resulting BMR is in units of kilocalories per day.
