Concept explainers
The respiratory system is comprised of organs that are involved in breathing. This includes nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. In humans and other animals, lungs are considered as the primary organs of the respiratory system. Lungs play an important role in exchanging of gases. Lungs are surrounded by a thin layer known as pleura.
Answer to Problem 1MWE
Surgical puncture of the pleura is referred to as pleurocentesis.
Explanation of Solution
Pleurocentesis is also referred to as thoracocentesis, a diagnostic or surgical procedure in which a needle is injected into the pleural space between the lungs and the chest wall. This diagnostic procedure is used to determine the nature and source of pleural effusion. Pleural effusion is termed as a medical condition in which the space between the lungs and the chest wall is composed of excess fluid. The pleural effusions may cause difficulty in breathing if untreated.
