Chapter 7, Problem 26SAE
Summary Introduction

To review:

Determine the number of cranial nerve pairs that make a part of the nervous system. Also, give the name of those cranial nerves that are pure sensory in nature, responsible for the activation of chewing muscles, and regulation of heart rate and activity of digestive tract.

Introduction:

The cranial nerves are the pair of nerves that arise directly from the brain unlike the spinal nerves, which arise from the spinal cord. The major functions of these cranial nerves include carrying information from the sensory organs to the brain and regulation of glands and the internal organs. The cranial nerves are sequentially numbered, and in most cases, their names indicate structures controlled by them.

Students have asked these similar questions
When a patient flexes their neck, the head tips to the right side. Also, their tongue sticks out slightly to the left when they try to stick it straight out. Where is the damage to the brain stem most likely located? Are any of the cranial nerves involved? If so, which ones?
Which cranial nerves may be damaged if you can’t: smile equally on both sides of your face, identify an odor, constrict your pupil in bright light, chew or clench your jaw, hear?
Which brain lobe is located at the back of the brain, and what is one major function of this area? How does it differ from the hippocampus?
