Concept Introduction:

Apoptosis a natural biological pathway that occurs intracellularly and leads to the death of cell in a well-programmed manner. Apoptosis is initiated by a specific class of enzymes called caspases that triggers a cascade of reactions upon their activation. Caspases are homodimers of cysteine that are produced in an inactive form, which is called procaspases.

Apoptosis generally occurs in response to cell injury or uncontrollable division of cells. An injury can be due to a viral infection that can spread to other healthy cells, which is why it is killed by this process. The uncontrollable division of cells is also checked by this process as it can lead to cancer. Hence, apoptosis is a very significant process.
