In an observational study, it was noticed that people that eat more chocolate tend to have better blood flow than the general population. Researchers wonder whether the improved blood flow might be caused by flavanols (a molecule found in many foods). Dark chocolate contains a high concentration of flavanols, but milk chocolate contains a much lower concentration. How could the researchers design an experiment to determine the effects of flavanol on blood flow from the different types of chocolate?
Algal blooms can have negative effects on an ecosystem by dominating its phytoplankton communities. Gonyostomum semen is a nuisance alga infesting many parts of northern Europe. Could the overall biomass of G. semen be controlled by grazing zooplankton species? A research team examined the relationship between the net growth rate of G. semen and the number of Daphnia magna grazers introduced in test tubes. Net growth rate was computed by comparing the initial and final abundance of G. semen in the experiment, with a negative value indicative of a decrease in abundance. The study also examined the grazing effect of another species, Daphnia pulex, on the abundance of the nuisance alga G. semen in the lab. The table displays the findings

- A medical student at a community college in city Q wants to study the factors affecting the systolic blood pressure of a person (Y). Generally, the systolic blood pressure depends on the BMI of a person (B) and the age of the person A. She wants to test whether or not the BMI has a significant effect on the systolic blood pressure, keeping the age of the person constant. For her study, she collects a random sample of 150 patients from the city and estimates the following regression function: Y= 15.50 +0.90B + 1.10A. How much does canned soup consumption increase urinary BPA concentration? That was the question addressed in a recent study1 in which consumption of canned soup over five days was associated with a more than 1000% increase in urinary BPA. In the study, 75 participants ate either canned soup or fresh soup for lunch for five days. On the fifth day, urinary BPA levels were measured. After a two-day break, the participants switched groups and repeated the process. The difference in BPA levels between the two treatments was measured for each participant. The study reports that a 95% confidence interval for the difference in means (canned minus fresh) is 19.6 to 25.5 μg/L. (a) Is this a randomized comparative experiment or a matched pairs experiment?
