Casting of molten metal is important in many industrial processes. Centrifugal casting is used for manufacturing pipes, bearings, and many other structures. A cylindrical enclosure is rotated rapidly and steadily about a horizontal axis, as in Figure P7.62. Molten metal is poured into the rotating cylinder and then cooled, forming the finished product. Turning the cylinder at a high rotation rate forces the solidifying metal strongly to the outside. Any bubbles are displaced toward the axis so that unwanted voids will not be present in the casting. Suppose a copper sleeve of inner radius 2.10 cm and outer radius 2.20 cm is to be cast. To eliminate bubbles and give high structural integrity, the centripetal acceleration of each bit of metal should be 100g. What rate of rotation is required? State the answer in revolutions per minute.

- The figure shows a 100 g puck revolving in a 20 cm radius circle on a frictionless table. The string passes through a hole in the center of the table and is tied to two 200 g weights. The lower weight is a light bag filled with sand. Suppose a pin pokes a hole in the bag and the sand slowly leaks out while the puck is revolving. What will be the puck's speed after all of the sand is gone?arrow_forwarda. 2. An oxygen gas molecule (O,) has a moment of inertia of 1.9 x 10 46 kg · m2 about an axis that is perpendicular and midway between the two oxygen atoms. If the total mass of the molecule is 5.3 x 10-26 kg, what is the approximate distance between the two oxygen atoms?arrow_forwardThe spin cycle of a clothes washer extracts the water in clothing by greatly increasing the water's apparent weight so that it is efficiently squeezed through the clothes and out the holes in the drum. In a top loader's spin cycle, the 35 cm diameter drum spins at 1150 rpm around a vertical axis. What is the apparent weight of a 1.1 g drop of water?arrow_forward
- If you are having trouble opening a stuck jar lid, you can use a rubber pad to help you grip the lid and twist. Explain the purpose of the rubber pad and how it helps you to unscrew the lid. (Assume that the rubber pad has negligible thickness, i.e. it will not increase the radius of the jar a. lid.) b. In Case A, a ball is released from rest at the top of a frictionless hill of height h. In Case B, an identical ball is released from rest at the top of a hill of height h with sufficient friction that the ball can roll without slipping. In which case does the center of mass of the ball have a larger speed at the bottom of the hill or is it the same in both cases? Explain.arrow_forwardAstrophysicists believe that our sun started out as a large cloud of hydrogen gas. Gravitational attraction between the gas molecules caused it to collapse. We can approximate both the initial cloud of gas and the sun to be spheres of uniform density. The mass of the initial cloud of gas and the sun are the same. The cylinder rotates about its axis at an angular speed of w. Upon rotation, the level of water will not remain flat; it will be curved such that it has an increasingly higher level as one moves away from the centre towards the walls of the cylinder. Consider a coordinate system that is fixed at the cylinder and rotates with at the same angular velocity. Take the z' axis to be aligned with the axis of the cylinder such that the angular velocity points along the +z' direction. The x'y plane is, hence, parallel to the cylinder base. Place your coordinate system such that the lowest point on the water surface is at the origin. Solve the following questions: (a) Consider a point mass m that is located at the surface of the water at the coordinates (x', 0, z'). Draw a free body diagram of the mass indicating the directions of the weight, the "normal" force' (FN) from the rest of the water, and all inertial (fictitious) forces. (b)…arrow_forward
- You have an internship working at a company that designs and produces washing and drying equipment. Your supervisor is in the process of designing a new, very large dryer to be used in commercial establishments with intense laundry needs, such as restaurants (tablecloths, napkins) and hotels (sheets, towels). In a dryer, a cylindrical tub containing wet material is rotated steadily about a horizontal axis as shown in the figure below. So that the material will dry uniformly, it is made to tumble. The rate of rotation of the smooth-walled tub is chosen so that a small piece of cloth will lose contact with the tub when the cloth is at an angle of 62.0° above the horizontal. Your supervisor's tub is designed to have a radius of r= 1.48 m and she asks you to determine the appropriate rate of revolution.
