Chapter 7, Problem 7.1CT

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Among the electricity generated by nuclear plant and coal burning plant one has to be chosen.

Concept Introduction:

There are several methods for the generation of electricity. Nuclear power plants, coal-burning plants are example for such methods.

Nuclear power plant uses radioactive uranium as the fuel whereas coal-burning power plant uses hydrocarbon as fuels.

Explanation of Solution

The nuclear power plant is a better way of generating electricity while compared to coal burning plant. Even though nuclear power plant requires lots of safety measure, the pollution caused by those plants is low. Coal-burning power plant uses large amount hydrocarbon as fuel and these fuel after burning will contaminate the air by producing greenhouse gases. Also, large amount of electricity can be produced using fewer amounts of fuels in nuclear plants. So it is better to use nuclear plants instead of coal-burning plants for power generation.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Situation for changing the opinion on power generation by nuclear plant has to be mentioned.

Concept Introduction:

Explanation of Solution

The electricity generation through nuclear plant is highly attractive but it is risky too. Even though, several protective measures taken before and after constructing the plant, the chances for accident cannot be ignored. There are several such examples in the history. So once an accident occurs the consequence will be very large and it persists through years and years. The disposal of radioactive wastes is also a challenging issue. By considering these issues, there is a need of alternative methods for power generation.
