Innova uses 1,000 units of the component IMC2 every month to manufacture one of its products. The unit costs incurred to manufacture the component are as follows.
Direct materials | $ 65.00 |
Direct labor | 45.00 |
Overhead | 126.50 |
Total | $236.50 |
Overhead costs include variable material handling costs of $6.50, which arc applied to products on the basis of direct material costs. The remainder of the overhead costs are applied on the basis of direct labor dollars and consist of 60% variable costs and 40% fixed costs.
A vendor has offered to supply the IMC2 component at a price of $200 per unit.
Instructions
(a) Should Innova purchase the component from the outside vendor if Innova’s capacity remains idle?
(b) Should Innova purchase the component from the outside vendor if it can use its facilities to manufacture another product? What information will Innova need to make an accurate decision? Show your calculations.
(c) What are the qualitative factors that Innova will have to consider when making this decision?

If 17,500 equivalent units are produced, what is the equivalent conversion cost per unit?arrow_forwardBobcat uses a traditional cost system and estimates next years overhead will be $800.000, as driven by the estimated 25,000 direct labor hours. It manufactures three products and estimates the following costs: If the labor rate is $30 per hour, what is the per-unit cost of each product?arrow_forward
- Box Springs. Inc., makes two sizes of box springs: queen and king. The direct material for the queen is $35 per unit and $55 is used in direct labor, while the direct material for the king is $55 per unit, and the labor cost is $70 per unit. Box Springs estimates it will make 4,300 queens and 3,000 kings in the next year. It estimates the overhead for each cost pool and cost driver activities as follows: How much does each unit cost to manufacture?arrow_forwardPlata Company has identified the following overhead activities, costs, and activity drivers for the coming year: Plata produces two models of microwave ovens with the following activity demands: The companys normal activity is 21,000 machine hours. Calculate the total overhead cost that would be assigned to Model X using an activity-based costing system: a. 230,000 b. 240,000 c. 280,000 d. 190,000arrow_forwardIdentify cost graphs The following cost graphs illustrate various types of cost behavior: For each of the following costs, identify the cost graph that best illustrates its cost behavior as the number of units produced increases: A. Total direct materials cost B. Electricity costs of 1,000 per month plus 0.10 per kilowatt-hour C. Per-unit cost of straight-line depreciation on factory equipment D. Salary of quality control supervisor, 20,000 per month E. Per-unit direct labor costarrow_forward
- Box Springs, Inc., makes two sizes of box springs: twin and double. The direct material for the twin is $25 per unit and $40 s used in direct labor, while the direct material for the double is $40 per unit, and the labor cost is $50 per unit. Box Springs estimates it will make 5,000 twins and 9,000 doubles in the next year. It estimates the overhead for each cost pool and cost driver activities as follows: How much does each unit cost to manufacture?arrow_forwardCool Pool has these costs associated with production of 20,000 units of accessory products: direct materials, $70; direct labor, $110; variable manufacturing overhead, $45; total fixed manufacturing overhead, $800,000. What is the cost per unit under both the variable and absorption methods?arrow_forwardDuring the week of August 21, Parley Manufacturing produced and shipped 4,000 units of its machine tools: 1,500 units of Tool SK1 and 2,500 units of Tool SK3. The cycle time for SK1 is 0.73 hour, and the cycle time for SK3 is 0.56 hour. The following costs were incurred: Required: 1. Assume that the value-stream costs and total units shipped apply only to one model (a single-product value stream). Calculate the unit cost, and comment on its accuracy. 2. Assume that Tool SK1 is responsible for 60% of the materials cost. Calculate the unit cost for Tool SK 1 and Tool SK3, and comment on its accuracy. Explain the rationale for using units shipped instead of units produced in the calculation. 3. Calculate the unit cost for the two models, using DBC. Explain when and why this cost is more accurate than the unit cost calculated in Requirement 2.arrow_forward
- Colonels uses a traditional cost system and estimates next years overhead will be $480,000, with the estimated cost driver of 240,000 direct labor hours. It manufactures three products and estimates these costs: If the labor rate is $25 per hour, what is the per-unit cost of each product?arrow_forwardSmokeCity, Inc., manufactures barbeque smokers. Based on past experience, SmokeCity has found that its total annual overhead costs can be represented by the following formula: Overhead cost = 543,000 + 1.34X, where X equals number of smokers. Last year, SmokeCity produced 20,000 smokers. Actual overhead costs for the year were as expected. Required: 1. What is the driver for the overhead activity? 2. What is the total overhead cost incurred by SmokeCity last year? 3. What is the total fixed overhead cost incurred by SmokeCity last year? 4. What is the total variable overhead cost incurred by SmokeCity last year? 5. What is the overhead cost per unit produced? 6. What is the fixed overhead cost per unit? 7. What is the variable overhead cost per unit? 8. Recalculate Requirements 5, 6, and 7 for the following levels of production: (a) 19,500 units and (b) 21,600 units. (Round your answers to the nearest cent.) Explain this outcome.arrow_forwardMedical Tape makes two products: Generic and Label. It estimates it will produce 423,694 units of Generic and 652,200 of Label, and the overhead for each of its cost pools is as follows: It has also estimated the activities for each cost driver as follows: How much is the overhead allocated to each unit of Generic and Label?arrow_forward
