Chapter 7, Problem 86P
Summary Introduction
To explain: The course of action of Person X.
Non-linear programming (NLP):
Non-linear programming (NLP) is used in complex optimization problems where the objectives or constraints or sometimes both are non-linear functions of the decision variables. A model can be termed as non-linear for more than one reason.

Consider a capital budgeting problem with seven projects represented by binary (0 or 1) variables X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7.
Write a constraint modeling the situation in which only 2 of the projects from 1, 2, 3, and 4 must be selected.
Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at least 2 of the project from 1, 3, 4, and 7 must be selected.
Write a constraint modeling the situation project 3 or 6 must be selected, but not both.
Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at most 4 projects from the 7 can be selected.
You have 1000 euros to invest. At the beginning of each year, you can invest your available money in three different plans, Plan 1, Plan 2 and Plan 3 (available money means not blocked in a plan).
Money put in Plan 1 is blocked for one year. After one year, you total interest rate is 5% (if you invested 100 euros, you will have 105 euros after one year).
Money put in Plan 2 is blocked for two years. After two years, you total interest rate is 12% (if you invested 100 euros, you will have 112 euros after two years).
Money put in Plan 3 is blocked for three years. After three years, you total interestrate is 19%.
Your planning horizon is 7 years. You want to maximize your available money at the end of the 7th year (again, available money means not blocked in a plan).
What would be the linear programme solving the problem.
As a toy builder you enjoy making toys for both fun and profit. For your latest production batch, you need to decide how many of each toy to make. The four types of toys you make are airplanes, helicopters, bus, and cars.
To build an airplane you need 3 blue blocks, 2 green rods, and 1 red wheel. To build a helicopter you need 2 blue blocks, 4 green rods, and 1 red wheel. To build a bus you need 1 blue blocks, 3 green rods, and 4 red wheel. To build a car you need 1 blue block, 2 green rods, and 4 red wheels.
Your profit margins for each toy are as follows: Airplane P7, Helicopter P8, Bus P6, Car P5.
The parts available to you are as follows: 30 blue blocks, 44 green rods, and 50 red wheels. It is ok to have leftover parts.
Question: What is the maximum profit you can achieve?

- Suppose you begin year 1 with 5000. At the beginning of each year, you put half of your money under a mattress and invest the other half in Whitewater stock. During each year, there is a 40% chance that the Whitewater stock will double, and there is a 60% chance that you will lose half of your investment. To illustrate, if the stock doubles during the first year, you will have 3750 under the mattress and 3750 invested in Whitewater during year 2. You want to estimate your annual return over a 30-year period. If you end with F dollars, your annual return is (F/5000)1/30 1. For example, if you end with 100,000, your annual return is 201/30 1 = 0.105, or 10.5%. Run 1000 replications of an appropriate simulation. Based on the results, you can be 95% certain that your annual return will be between which two values?arrow_forwardUse excel for this problem A trust officer at the Blacksburg National Bank needs to determine how to invest $150,000 in the following collection of bonds to maximize the annual return. Bond Annual Return Maturity Risk Tax Free A 9.5% Long High Yes B 8.0% Short Low Yes C 9.0% Long Low No D 9.0% Long High Yes E 9.0% Short High No The officer wants to invest at least 40% of the money in short-term issues and no more than 20% in high-risk issues. At least 25% of the funds should go in tax-free investments, and at least 45% of the total annual return should be tax free. Formulate the LP model for this problem. The higher the ratings, the higher the price the network can charge for advertising and the higher the profits of the network. To keep things simple, we will focus on two networks, CBS and NBC, and two of the prime time spots, 8-9PM and 9-10PM. Each network needs to decide which time slot to place its hit show, 8-9PM or 9-10PM. The other time slot will be filled by a run of the mill show. The following payoff matrix shows the total number of viewers (in millions) if each network places its hit show in each of the time slots: CBS 8-9PM time slot 9-10PM time slot NBC 8-9PM time slot 100, 110 85, 120 9-10PM time slot 120, 40 70, 90 If you are the program manager for CBS, what time slot would you place your hit TV show (assuming that your goal is to maximize the number of viewers)? Please explain why. If you are the program…arrow_forward
- Is my solution correct and did I fully answer the questions? (see attachment for my solution) Question: There are three factories on Momiss River. Each emits two types of pollutants, labeled P1 and P2, into the river. If the waste from each factory is processed, the pollution in the river can be reduced. It costs $1,500 to process a ton of factory 1 waste, and each ton processed reduces the amount of P1 by 0.10 ton and the amount of P2 by 0.45 ton. It costs $2,500 to process a ton of factory 2 waste, and each ton processed reduces the amount of P1 by 0.20 ton and the amount of P2 by 0.25 ton. It costs $3,000 to process a ton of factory 3 waste, and each ton processed reduces the amount of P1 by 0.40 ton and the amount of P2 by 0.50 ton. The state wants to reduce the amount of P1 in the river by at least 125 tons and the amount of P2 by at least 175 tons. a. - Four cleaning crews are available for a job that requires an area of 5000 square feet to be cleaned. Each cleaning crew charges a fixed cost that is only charged if the company is hired and a variable cost that is dependent on the number of square feet cleaned (see below). The job can be performed either by a single cleaner or by a combination of cleaners. Company A Cost = 0.01x2 + x + 25,000 Company B Cost = 0.14x2 - 11x + 20,000 Company C Cost = 0.07x2 - 6x + 3000 Company D Cost = 0.15x2 -10x +1000 Formulate and solve a mathematical programming model that will determine which crews to hire and how much (in square feet) of the job that each should do.
