- 62 Ammonium dinitramide (ADN), NH4N(NO2)2, was considered as a possible replacement for aluminium chloride as the oxidizer in the solid fuel booster rockets used to launch the space shuttle. When detonated by a spark, AND rapidly decomposes to produce a gaseous mixture of N2,O2, and H2O. (This is not a combustion reaction. The ADN is the only reactant.) The reaction releases a lot of heat, so the gases are initially formed at high temperature and pressure. The thrust of the rocket results mainly from the expansion of this gas mixture. Suppose a 2.3-kg sample of ADN is denoted and decomposes completely to give N2,O2, and H2O. If the resulting gas mixture expands until it reaches a temperature of 100°C and a pressure of 1.00 atm, what volume will it occupy? Is your answer consistent with the proposed use of ADN as a rocket fuel?arrow_forwardWhat is the kinetic energy of one mole of mercury that has a speed of 200 m/s? (M(Hg) = 0.201kg.mol-1)arrow_forwardCalcium carbide, CaC2, is manufactured by reducing lime with carbon at high temperature. (The carbide is used in turn to make acetylene, an industrially important organic chemical.) Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?arrow_forward
- Given the data below, the energy released during the formation of ∆fHo for the gas diborane, B2H6 (g) is: 4B (s) + 3O2 (g) → 2B2O3 (s) ∆rHo = –2509.1 kJ 2H2 (g) + O2 (g) → 2H2O (g) ∆rHo = –571.7 kJ B2H6 (g) + 3O2 (g) → B2O3 (s) + 3H2O(g) ∆rHo = -2147.5 kJarrow_forwardA typical formulation for window glass is 75% SiO₂, 15% Na₂O, and 10.% CaO by mass. What masses of sand (SiO₂),sodium carbonate, and calcium carbonate must be combined toproduce 1.00 kg of glass after carbon dioxide is driven off bythermal decomposition of the carbonates?arrow_forwardDinitrogen monoxide, N2O (commonly called nitrous oxide), is prepared by the careful decomposition of ammonium nitrate and is used as an oxidizing agent in rocket engines as well as a weak general anesthetic (where you may know it as laughing gas). However, it is also known to be a powerful greenhouse gas. In a Science magazine article, it was stated that Human activities may be causing an unprecedented rise in the terrestrial N2O source. Marine N2O production may also rise substantially as result of eutrophication, warming and ocean acidification. [L. A. Codispoti, Science, Vol. 327, pp. 1339-1340, 2010.] The powerful greenhouse gas N2O is used as a propellant in cans of instant whipped cream. (a) Draw a Lewis electron dot structure for N2O, and specify the formal charge on each atom and the molecular geometry. (b) The atom connections are NNO. Why is the connection NON not likely? The highest N2O concentration observed in the ocean is about 800 nM (nanomolar). At this concentration, what is the mass of N2O per liter?arrow_forward

(c) In the balanced chemical equationfor this reaction, what is the coefficient in front of theproduct if the coefficient in front of Br2(l) is 1?arrow_forwardThe equation for photosynthesis is 6H2O (water) + 6CO2 (carbon dioxide) + Light Energy → C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2(oxygen). When first discovered, scientists were trying to decide if the oxygen in the product came from carbon dioxide or water. Which statement describes how scientists traced the path of oxygen?arrow_forwardHow many grams of CO2 are produced from burning one gallon of biodiesel(3,311 g of biodiesel)?C19H36O2 + 27O2 ---> 19 CO2 + 18 H2Oarrow_forward

Identify the reactants and products and the stoichiometric coefficients. To what do the designations s and g refer?arrow_forwardAcetylene torches are used for welding. These torches use a mixture of acetylene gas, C2H2, and oxygen gas, O2 to produce the following combustion reaction: 2 C2H2 (g) + 5 O2 (g) → 4 CO2 (g) + 2 H2O (g) Imagine that you have a 5.3 L gas tank and a 2.4 L gas tank. You need to fill one tank with oxygen and the other with acetylene to use in conjunction with your welding torch. If you fill the larger tank with oxygen to a pressure of 108 atm , to what pressure should you fill the acetylene tank to ensure that you run out of each gas at the same time? Assume ideal behavior for all gases. Express your answer numerically, in terms of atm to 0 decimal places.arrow_forward
