The thoracic cage, also known as the bony thorax, protects and supports vital organs like the lungs and the heart. The thoracic cage has different elements, which include thoracic vertebrae (posteriorly), ribs (laterally), and sternum, as well ascostal cartilages (anteriorly). The sternum is a flat bone formed by the fusion of three bones. It includes manubrium, body, and xiphoid process. It is located in the anterior midline of the thorax. The sternum has essential landmarks or sections, namely, the jugular notch, the sternal angle, and the xiphisternal joint.
