Chapter 7.7, Problem 14CC
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The systematic name should be provided for the given bicyclic compound.
Concept Introduction:
Any organic molecule can be named by using certain rules given by IUPAC. IUPAC name consists of three parts in major namely Prefix suffix and root word.
- - Prefix represents the substituent present in the molecule and its position in the root name.
- - Suffix denotes the presence of functional group if any in the molecule. It can be an alkyl, halogen etc.
- - Root word represents the longest continuous carbon skeleton of the organic molecule.
- - The structure of a molecule can be drawn by analyzing the presence of prefix, suffix and root word in the given IUPAC name.
- - When a molecule consists of cyclic structure, the root word of the molecule is prefixed with cyclo.
- - For bicyclic molecules, the number of carbons in each cycle is mentioned in brackets.
