Concept explainers
The first three row operations introduced in this section can be used to put most matrices into a form called reduced row echelon form. (This is the form that most computer programs use to solve systems of equations.) The reduced row echelon form for the matrix in Try This One 4 is
- (a) Explain why the reduced row echelon form is helpful in solving systems.
- (b) Use the first three row operations from this section to transform the original augmented matrix for Tiy This One 4 into the matrix to the left. (Hint: First, get the first column to look like the one in the matrix to the left. Then get a 1 in the second row second column and proceed from there.)

- Consider the matrix A=[2314]. Show that any of the three types of elementary row operations can be used to create a leading 1 at the top of the first column. Which do you prefer and why?arrow_forwardExplain the difference between the row-echelon form and the reduced row-echelon form of a matrix.arrow_forwardStudents frequently perform the following type of calculation to introduce a zero into a matrix: [3124]3R22R1[31010] However, 3R22R1 is not an elementary row operation. Why not? Show how to achieve the same result using elementary row operations.arrow_forward
