Chapter 8, Problem 12TYU
Summary Introduction

To explain:

Whether wild varieties of soybean will have a higher or lower rate of photorespiration.

Concept introduction:

Photorespiration ( C2 photosynthesis) occurs when rubisco does its oxygenase function and combines oxygen in place of carbon dioxide to RuBP (ribulose bisphosphate). This is a wasteful process and it also competes with Calvin cycle.

EVOLUTION CONNECTION Photorespiration can decreasesoybeans’ photosynthetic output by about 50%. Would youexpect this figure to be higher or lower in wild relatives ofsoybeans? Why?
You add a chemical to plant leaf cells that binds plastoquinone (PQ), leaving only a small amount of PQ active in the cells. Predict two potential effects that this will have on photosynthesis.
Using the graph comparing photosynthetic rate and absorption of different wavelengths of light, what can be concluded?    a) The photosynthesis rate at 550 nm is the highest b) Chlorophyll a absorbs wavelengths at both ends of the spectrum c) Chlorophyll b is associated with the greatest rate of photosynthesis. d) Carotenoids absorb the narrowest range of wavelengths of light
