Summary Introduction

To review:

The given blank space in the statement, “The complete breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen occurs in two major stages: ______ and _______. The first of these stages occurs in the _________ of the cell, and the second stage occurs in organelles called ________. Conditions in which oxygen is present are described as _________.”

Introduction:

Glucose is an essential energy source for most organisms. Breakdown of glucose can occur either in conditions in which oxygen is present or conditions in which the oxygen is absent. When the breakdown of glucose occurs in conditions when oxygen is present, then it occurs in two major steps.

Explanation of Solution

In the stages of glucose breakdown, the first step is known as glycolysis. The second step or stage is called cellular respiration. Glycolysis is the stage, in which the glucose splits into two 3-carbon-containing molecules called pyruvate. The process of glycolysis includes an energy investment stage and later energy harvesting stage. This process occurs in the cytosol of the cell.

Cellular respiration occurs as the second stage of glucose breakdown and it occurs in the mitochondria. In this stage, the pyruvate molecules made during glycolysis are broken down into water molecules and carbon dioxide. The conditions, in which there is the presence of oxygen are called aerobic condition.

Conclusion

The complete breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen occurs in two major stages: glycolysis and cellular respiration. The first of these stages occur in the cytosol of the cell, and the second stage occurs in organelles called mitochondria. Conditions in which oxygen is present are described as aerobic conditions.”
