Explanation The human population growth and the overconsumption of resources per person have greatly expanded the human ecological footprint. The people have eliminated, degraded, and fragmented vast areas of wildlife habitat as they have spread out all over the planet. It has been estimated that pesticides kill more than 67 million birds and 6-14 million fish each year, and they threaten about 20% of the country’s endangered and threatened species. Climate change is also driving a quarter to half of all land animals and plants to extinction. The increase in temperatures in polar habitat has threatened the species of polar bears. It is because due to melting ice, the polar bears are unable to prey upon seals, which is their major source of food. DDT is a fat soluble chemical that is present in pesticides. It gets into water bodies by agricultural runoff. It gets accumulated in the fatty tissues of animals. Then, the accumulated DDT is biologically magnified in the bodies of animals at each higher trophic level. This process is known as biomagnifications.
