Chapter 8, Problem 8.131QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The energy difference between the incomplete and complete combustion of one mole of methane is to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The energy which is required in a molecule to break one mole of a covalent bond in its gaseous phase is known as bond energy of that bond. It is expressed in terms of enthalpy change denoted by (ΔH) .

To determine: The energy difference between the incomplete and complete combustion of one mole of methane.

Answer to Problem 8.131QP

The energy difference between the incomplete and complete combustion of one mole of methane is 278.5kJ/mol_ .

Explanation of Solution

Explanation

The reaction for incomplete combustion of methane is,

2CH4(g)+3O2(g)2CO(g)+4H2O(g)

The change in enthalpy for the given reaction is calculated by using the formula,

ΔHrxn=ΔHbondbreakingΔHbondforming

Bond energy of a CH bond is 413kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a O=O bond is 495kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a CO bond is 1072kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a OH bond is 463kJ/mol .

Substitute the value of average bond energies of CH , O=O , CO and OH bond in the above formula to calculate the enthalpy change for the reaction.

ΔHrxn=(8×CH+3×O=O)(2×CO+8×OH)=(8×413kJ/mol+3×495kJ/mol)(2×1072+8×463kJ/mol)=(3304+1485kJ/mol)(2144+3704kJ/mol)=47895848kJ/mol

Simplify the above equation,

ΔH=1059kJ/mol

The change in enthalpy for two moles of methane is 1059kJ/mol . For one mole of methane the change in enthalpy is,

ΔH=1059kJ/mol2=529.5kJ/mol

Hence, the enthalpy of incomplete combustion of methane is 529.5kJ/mol .

The equation for complete combustion of methane is,

CH4(g)+2O2(g)CO2(g)+2H2O(g)

The change in enthalpy for the given reaction is calculated by using the formula,

ΔHrxn=ΔHbondbreakingΔHbondforming

Bond energy of a CH bond is 413kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a O=O bond is 495kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a C=O bond is 799kJ/mol .

Bond energy of a OH bond is 463kJ/mol .

Substitute the value of average bond energies of CH , O=O , C=O and OH bond in the above formula to calculate the enthalpy change for the reaction.

ΔHrxn=(4×CH+2×O=O)(2×C=O+4×OH)=(4×413kJ/mol+2×495kJ/mol)(2×799+4×463kJ/mol)=(1652+990kJ/mol)(1598+1852kJ/mol)=26423450kJ/mol

Simplify the above equation,

ΔH=808kJ/mol

The change in enthalpy for one mole of methane is 808kJ/mol

Hence, the enthalpy of complete combustion of methane is. 808kJ/mol .

The difference between the enthalpy of complete combustion of methane and the incomplete combustion of methane is,

Differenceinenthalpy=808kJ/mol(529.5kJ/mol)=808+529.5kJ/mol=278.5kJ/mol_

Hence, the incomplete combustion reaction releases 278.5kJ/mol_ less heat than the complete combustion reaction.

Conclusion

The energy difference between the incomplete and complete combustion of one mole of methane is 278.5kJ/mol_ .
