Concept explainers
For the following computer problems, any appropriate software may be used. Input prompts should fully explain what is required of the user (the program should be user-friendly). The resulting output should be well labeled and self-explanatory. For spreadsheet problems, any appropriate software may be used.
8.27 Use a spreadsheet program to solve on more of the following: Example 8.4 , Problem 8.31 , 8.32 , or 8.35. The user should be able to input the appropriate geometric properties for any shapes of the types shown and the program should then determine the appropriate quantities and display the result (s). Vary a single shape or dimension and observe the effect on the properties of the built-up cross section.

- A uniform beam that 10-m long is being supported by two men, one man at each end. The weight of the beam. Is 100-N. If the first man supporting at the right side exert twice as much as the second man on the left, where must a 50-N motor be placed (measured from the first man) on top of the beam? Show complete solution.arrow_forwardNote: End of the question answer also given if you got answer other than that values please leave it. Two long poles each 5.0 m tall, one of steel and one of hardwood (such as oak), are anchored vertically in a concrete slab so that only that part above the concrete can bend or be compressed. If the top of each is connect to the ground by a wire under tension to a point 1.0 m from its base, by how much does each bend and is compressed by this wire if it has a tension of 10,000 N. Assume that each pole has a radius of 6.0 cm. Answers: Δxwood = 87 μm, ΔLwood = 290 μmarrow_forwardThe larger and smaller pulleys of a chain block has 31 and 29 recesses respectively. If the efficiency is 45% when raising a load of 8kN, calculate, 6.1 the effort required 6.2 the effective distance through which the effort must move in order to lift the load 350 mm.arrow_forward
- The connection between an electric motor and a work machine shaft is achieved through a flanged rigid coupling where the torque is transmitted via coupling flanges. The power and rotational speed of the electric motor are determined using the last two digits of the student numbers, according to the formulas provided below. The coupling flanges are connected with three bolts of grade 5.6 with a 40 mm pitch circle diameter. The surface pressure endurance limit for the bolts is 16 MPa. The contact length between the bolt and the coupling flange is 12 mm. The coefficient of friction on the flange surfaces is 0.14, and the operating factor for the coupling is 0.8. The working conditions and material properties of the contact element are well-known, allowing for accurate force and stress analysis. (NO=35) a) Determine the bolt to be used in the coupling from the table. b) Draw the full sectional view of the used coupling. - The energy required to shear a 1-in. round bar is approximately 1000 ft-lb. In use, the shearing machine is expected to make a maximum of 40 cutting strokes a minute. The frictional losses should not exceed 18 % of the motor output. The shaft carrying the flywheel is to average 150 rpm. (a) What motor horsepower is required? (b) Assuming a size of flywheel and choosing appropriate f C, find the mass and sectional dimensions of the rim of a cast-iron flywheel. The width of the rim is to equal the depth and is not to exceed 3 ½ in. It would be safe to assume that all the work of shearing is supplied by the kinetic energy given up by the flywheel.arrow_forwardWhat weight (kg) can be lifted by a double threaded screw that has an efficiency of 85% if it is opetated by a 52 lb force at the end of a 25 inches lever ?The pitch of the screw is 0.55 inchesarrow_forwardA group of cell- phone antennas are to be installed on a single steel pole that will be embedded into a dense silty sand with Φ' = 35°.
