Concept explainers
For Exercises 1 through 20, perform each of the following steps.
a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
b. Find the critical value(s).
c. Compute the test value.
d. Make the decision.
e. Summarize the results.
Use the traditional method of hypothesis testing unless otherwise specified.
13. Alcohol and Tobacco Use by High School Students The use of both alcohol and tobacco by high school seniors has declined in the last 30 years. Alcohol use is down from 68.2 to 43.1%, and the use of cigarettes by high school seniors has decreased from 36.7 to 20.4%. A random sample of 300 high school seniors from a large region indicated that 18% had used cigarettes during the 30 days prior to the survey. At the 0.05 level of significance, does this differ from the national proportion?

- Find the sample space for the experiment. You toss a coin twice and a six-sided die once.arrow_forwardWhat is an experiment?arrow_forwardAssume you want to know whether the prices of meatballs change during the christmas holiday season. You therefore go to 14 meat-stores before the holiday to check the prices of one kilo of meatballs. In the middle of the holidays, you walk around to the same 14 meat-stores and check the prices again. The results of your research is seen in the table in the picture below. Make a hypothesis test, where you test whether the prices have changed between the two surveys. Use ? = 0.05arrow_forward
- DIRECTIONS: Identify the appropriate hypothesis test for each of the following research situations labeled (a) - (d). Make sure to label your responses clearly! a. A researcher wants to see whether that is a significant difference people who sleep 4 hours per day and those who sleep 8 hours per day their work productivity. b. A researcher conducts a study to examine the relationship between happiness level and number of hours a kid spend time with their parents during summer time. C. A researcher would like to determine whether a nutrition milk will benefit for 6 months baby, a group of n=100 6 months baby is measured about their healthy level before and after nutrition milk is provided d. A researcher would like to determine whether there is a significant different between 2 months, 4 months and 6 months baby from drinking nutrition milk for 6 weeks on their healthy levelarrow_forwardWhat are the correct answers?arrow_forwardWhat are the two decisions that you can make from performing a hypothesis test? Question content area bottom Part 1 What are the two decisions that you can make from performing a hypothesis test? Select all that apply. A. make a type I error B. reject the alternative hypothesis C. make a type II error D. reject the null hypothesis E. fail to reject the alternative hypothesis F. fail to reject the null hypothesis G. accept the null hypothesis H. accept the alternative hypothesisarrow_forward
- Describe type I and type II errors for a hypothesis test of the indicated claim. A furniture store claims that at least 40% of its new customers will return to buy their next piece of furniture. Describe the type I error. Choose the correct answer below. OA. A type I error will occur when the actual proportion of new customers who return to buy their next piece of furniture is at least 0.40, but you fail to reject Ho: p20.40. OB. A type I error will occur when the actual proportion of new customers who return to buy their next piece furniture is at least 0.40, but you reject Ho: p20.40. OC. A type I error will occur when the actual proportion of new customers who return to buy their next piece of furniture is no more than 0.40, but you reject Ho: p ≤ 0.40. OD. A type I error will occur when the actual proportion of new customers who return to buy their next piece f furniture is no more than 0.40, but you fail to reject Ho: p ≤0.40. Describe the type II error. Choose the correct answer…arrow_forwardurgentarrow_forwardExpress the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in symbolic form.
