Concept explainers
Interpretation:
To explain the observation of treatment of alkyl chloride A with NaOCH2CH3 and dilute base in CH3CH2OH.
Concept introduction:
The most common mechanism for dehydrohalogenation is the E2 mechanism. An E2 reaction exhibits a second-order kinetics, in which the reaction is bimolecular and both the
The transition state of an E2 reaction consists of four atoms from the alkyl halide-one hydrogen atom, two carbon atoms, and the leaving group (X)-all aligned in the same plane. There are two ways for the C-H and C-x bonds to be coplanar. When the H and X atoms oriented on the same side of the molecule. This geometry is called syn periplanar. While the H and X atoms oriented on opposite sides of the molecule. This geometry is called anti periplanar. The dihedral angle for the C-H and C-X bonds equals 0° for the syn periplanar arrangement and 180° for the anti periplanar arrangement.
Whereas the E1 reaction is a twostep reaction of first order kinetics. The two steps reaction is the bond to the leaving group breaks first before the π bond is formed.

- Two isomers, A and B, of molecular formula C5H8 undergo catalytic hydrogenation with hydrogen gas and palladium on carbon to form the same C5H10 product. On ozonolysis followed by treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), isomer A gave a product of molecular formula C5H8O4 that has two carboxylic acid groups in it whereas isomer B gave a product of molecular formula C5H8O3 that contains a carboxylic acid group and a ketone group. What is the isometric pair of A and B that corresponds?arrow_forwardIdentify compounds A, B, and C. a.Compound A has molecular formula C8H12 and reacts with two equivalents of H2. A gives HCOCH2CH2CHO as the only product of oxidative cleavage with O3 followed by CH3SCH3. b.Compound B has molecular formula C6H10 and gives (CH3)2CHCH2CH2CH3 when treated with excess H2 in the presence of Pd. B reacts with NaNH2 and CH3I to form compound C (molecular formula C7H12).arrow_forwardCompound J, C16H16Br2, is optically active. On treatment with strong base, compounds K and L (each C16H14) are formed; K and L each absorb only 2 equivalents of hydrogen when reduced over a Pd/C catalyst. Compound K reacts with ozone to give phenylacetic acid (C6H5CH2COOH), while similar treatment of L gives 2 products. One product, M, is an aldehyde with formula C7H6O; the other product is glyoxal (CHO)2. Draw the structure of compound L.arrow_forward

Treatment of A with EtMgBr liberates no gas. Catalytic hydrogenation of A over Pd/C in the presence of quinoline poison and treatment of the product with O3 and then H2O2 gives an optically active tricarboxylic acid C8H12O6 (A tricarboxylic acids is a compound with three - CO2H groups.). Ethyl 3-phenylpropanoate (C6H5CH2CH2CO2CH2CH3) reacts with electrophiles to afford ortho- and para-disubstituted arenes, but ethyl 3-phenylprop-2-enoate (C6H5CH= CHCO2CH2CH3) reacts with electrophiles to afford meta-disubstituted arenes.arrow_forward
- Treatment of compound A (C8H17Br) with NaOCH2CH3 affords two constitutional isomers B and C. Ozonolysis of B affords CH2=O and (CH3CH2CH2)2C=O. Ozonolysis of C affords CH3CH2CH2COCH3 and CH3CH2CHO. - Wolff-Kishner reduction of compound W gave compound A. Treatment of A with m-chloroperbenzoic acid gave B which on reduction with LiAH4 gave C. Oxidation of compound C with chromic acid gave D (C9H14O). Suggest the structures for A, B, C, and D.arrow_forwardCompound A (C7H11Br) is treated with magnesium in ether to give B (C7H11MgBr), which reacts violently with D2O togive 1-methylcyclohexene with a deuterium atom on the methyl group (C). Reaction of B with acetone (CH3COCH3)followed by hydrolysis gives D (C10H18O). Heating D with concentrated H2SO4 gives E (C10H16), which decolorizestwo equivalents of Br2 to give F (C10H16Br4).
