Calculation:

Find the consolidation settlement at the center of the foundation using the relation.

Find the stress σo

σo=4.2m×16kN/m3+2m×189.81+5.2m2×17.59.81=67.2+16.38+19.99=103.57kN/m2

Height of clay Hc=5.2m

Cc=0.38eo=0.88

Find the net load per unit area using the relation.

q=QAγDf=30MN×1000kN1MN10×1216×2.2=214.8kN/m2

At the top of the clay layer,

m=Bz=102+2=2.5

n=Lz=122+2=3
