Answer to Problem 1BYL

The amount of force divided by the area upon which the force is applied is known as stress.

Explanation of Solution

Rocks appear as strong materials. However, under many settings and various conditions, they are capable of deform. Rocks undergo various forces resulting from burial, tectonic activity, heating or cooling, and other processes. When the forces result in enough stress, they lead to the deformation of rocks. It involves the movement, rotation, change in shape, or some combination of these.

A push or a pull that results or tends to result a change in the motion of a body is termed as force. Generally, it is expressed as the amount of acceleration experienced by a mass. Stress can be defined as the amount of force divided by the area upon which the force is applied. There are three different types of differential stress. They are compression, tension, and shear.
