Given info:

To examine the average number of calories burned per hour by the male tennis players, a random sample of 36 male tennis players were tested, the results of the number of calories based on the survey is x¯=544.8 . The additional information is about the population parameters μ=546 σ=3 and level of significance α=0.01 .

Calculation:

The testing hypotheses are given below:

Null hypothesis H0 :

H0:μ=546

Alternative hypothesis H1 :

H1:μ<546

Requirements for z-test about mean when population standard deviation (σ) known:

  • The sample must be drawn randomly from the desired population.
  • The sample must be greater than or equal to 30, if not the population must be approximately normal.

Here, the sample size is greater than 30 and the sample is drawn randomly.

Thus, z-test about mean is valid in this case.

Decision rule based on classical approach:

If z<zα , then reject the null hypothesis H0 .

Critical value:

For the level of significance,

α=0.01

Hence, the cumulative area to the left is,
