The area of the deck is $4x^2+90x+500$

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The pool is 25 ft long and 20 ft wide

Calculation:

Let the deck is at x ft from each side of the pool as shown in figure.

  

Hence, the area of the pool is given by $25\times 20=500{\text{ ft}}^2$

And the area of the deck is given by

  $\left(25+2x\right)\left(20+2x\right)$

Using the FOIL method to multiply and then combine the like terms

  $\begin{array}{l}\left(25+2x\right)\left(20+2x\right)\\ =500+50x+40x+4x^2\\ =4x^2+90x+500\end{array}$
