A type of virus that attacks only the bacteria is termed as bacteriophage. It uses the bacteria for its own reproduction because the viruses could replicate only in the host cells. T4 bacteriophage is one type of virus that infects the bacteria Escherichia coli. The T4 bacteriophages inject its own DNA into the bacterial cells and use their biological machinery and produce many numbers of viruses. The early steps that are involved in the life cycle of the bacteriophage are attachment and penetration.
