Scientist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) is often called the "father of modem genetics" and is famous for his work involving the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Suppose that the genes controlling the color of peas are Y for yellow and y for green. Each plant has two genes, one from the female (seed) and one from the male (pollen). The Y gene is dominant, and therefore a plant with genes YY will have yellow peas, a plant with genes Yy or yY will have yellow peas, and a plant with genes yy will have green peas.
If a plant with two yellow genes (YY) is crossed with a plant with two green genes (yy), the result is four hybrid offspring with genotypes Yy. The offspring will be yellow, but will carry the recessive green gene.
Suppose that both parent pea plants are hybrids with genotype Yy.
a. Make a chart showing the possible genotypes of offspring.
b. What is the probability that a given offspring will have green peas?
c. What is the probability that a give offspring will have yellow peas?

- 2. Suppose that in Example 2.27, 400 units of food A, 500 units of B, and 600 units of C are placed in the test tube each day and the data on daily food consumption by the bacteria (in units per day) are as shown in Table 2.7. How many bacteria of each strain can coexist in the test tube and consume all of the food? The manufacturer has extensive track records on all three suppliers and knows that 3% of Hall Electronics' LS-24 chips are defective, 5% of Schuller Sales' LS-24 chips, and 4% of Crawford Components' LS-24 chips are defective. defects. When LS-24 chips arrive at the manufacturer, they are placed directly in a warehouse and are not inspected or identified with the supplier's name. A worker selects a chip to install in a DVD player and finds it defective. What is the probability that it was made by Hall Electronics? What is the probability that Crawford Components made it? What is the probability that it was made by Schuller Sales?arrow_forward
- A health researcher studying child birth is interested in the possible effect that smoking by the mother during pregnancy has on the baby's birth weight. To investigate, the researcher conducts an observational study by reviewing 400 records of women in their twenties who have recently given birth for the first time. For each record, he notes whether or not the woman smoked during pregnancy and the baby's birth weight, in addition to the woman's education level, and age. From the data, the researcher creates two groups: women in their twenties who smoked during pregnancy and women in their twenties who did not smoke during pregnancy. Then he compares the average birth weight between the two groups. (a)Why might the researcher have chosen to perform an observational study (by gathering information from past records) and not a randomized experiment (by assigning pregnant women to either the smoking or nonsmoking group at random)? A second survey in 1985 showed that 70% of the largecar owners in 1975 still owned large cars in 1985, but 30% had changed to an intermediate-sized car. Of those who owned intermediate-sized cars in 1975, 10% had switched to large cars, 70% continued to drive intermediate-sized cars, and 20% had changed to small cars in 1985. Finally, of the small-car owners in 1975, 10% owned intermediate-sized cars and 90% owned small cars in 1985. Assuming that these trends continue, determine the percentages of Americans who own cars of each size in 1995 and the corresponding eventual percentages.arrow_forwardThere are X-Mart and Y-Mart convenience stores. It is assumed that each customer purchases once a week at one of the two supermarkets (but not both). In a study, a sample of 100 buyers was taken for 10 weeks. From this research it is known that if buyers go to X-mart store one week, 85 people will still buy at X-mart store the following week and if buyers go to Y-mart store one week, 70 people will still buy at Y-mart store. mart the following week. 1.
