Chapter 9, Problem 1AE
The Excel worksheet form on the next page is to be used to recreate the Review Problem relating to Harrald’s Fish House. The workbook, and instructions on how to complete the file, can be found in Connect.
You should proceed to the requirements below only after completing your worksheet.
Required:
- Check your worksheet by changing the revenue in cell D4 to $16.00; the cost of ingredients in cell D5 to $6.50; and the wages and salaries in cell B6 to $10,000. The activity variance for net operating income should now be $850 U, and the spending variance for total expenses should be $410 U. If you do not get these answers, find the errors in your worksheet and correct them.
- What is the activity variance for revenue? Explain this variance.
- What is the spending variance for the cost of ingredients? Explain this variance.
- Revise the data in your worksheet to reflect the results for the following year:

When a company has post-acquisition expenditures related to Property, Plant, and Equipment it must determine whether the amount
should be expensed as an ordinary repair or capitalized as a major repair, addition, or betterment. This requires considering the nature
of the expenditure and the use of judgment.
Many companies use a threshold amount. Any expenditure below the threshold is expensed. Items over the threshold are examined
and a decision is made about whether to expense or capitalize the item. This approach is justified by both materiality and considering
costs and benefits. For example, a company with $94 million in net property, plant, and equipment and $250 million of operating
expenses would not consider a $100 repair as material. Plus, if the company had to spend thousands of dollars examining every repair
expenditure, the costs of doing the analysis could easily outweigh the benefits.

Required information (The Excel worksheet form that appears below is to be used to recreate part of the example relating to Turbo Crafters that appears earlier in the chapter.)
Download the Applying Excel form and enter formulas in all cells that contain question marks.
For example, in cell B13 enter the formula "= B5".
After entering formulas in all of the cells that contained question marks, verify that the dollar amounts match the example in the text.
Check your worksheet by changing the estimated total amount of the allocation base in the Data area to 50,000 machine-hours, keeping all of the other data the same as in the original example. If your worksheet is operating properly, the predetermined overhead rate should now be $6.00 per machine-hour. If you do not get this answer, find the errors in your worksheet and correct them.
Save your completed Applying Excel form to your computer and then upload it here by clicking "Browse." Next, click "Save." You will use this…

For the Excel part of the question give the solutions in the form of the Excel equations. Please and thank you! :)
Download the Applying Excel form and enter formulas in all cells that contain question marks.
For example, in cell B34 enter the formula "= B9".
After entering formulas in all of the cells that contained question marks, verify that the dollar amounts match the example in the text.
Check your worksheet by changing the beginning work in process inventory to 100 units, the units started into production during the period to 2,500 units, and the units in ending work in process inventory to 200 units, keeping all of the other data the same as in the original example. If your worksheet is operating properly, the cost per equivalent unit for materials should now be $152.50 and the cost per equivalent unit for conversion should be $145.50.
Thank you!

- For this problem, there are 10 future value and present value exercises to be solved. Review the printout of the worksheet file COMPOUND that follows these requirements. This file also contains a second sheet called the Answer Sheet. Note that the worksheet is divided into four sections. You have to decide which section is appropriate for each exercise. Open the file COMPOUND from the website for this book at cengagebrain.com. To enter the four formulas in the appropriate cells, use the FV and PV functions for the annuities (see Appendix A in Excel Quick for a discussion of them). Unfortunately Excel does not provide functions for the future value of an amount nor the present value of an amount. Enter the following formulas for FORMULA1 and FORMULA2: FORMULA1: =B6*((1+B8)^B7) FORMULA2: =E6/((1+E8)^AE7) For the annuity calculations (FV and PV), it is important that you enter a value (or cell reference) for type to indicate the timing of the first payment.
